8 speed gear damage

Thoughts on the damage.

The gear just below it moves - up and down in the picture. Shifting at speed, not coming to a complete stop does just that.........

Does it need replaced, I pulled it out of a field where it sat for 20 years

Spline gear in the left lower of this pic. Is that the only bad spot? How's the other side? What was the exact issue that caused you to take it apart? You might get away with cleaning up the burrs with a small triangle file. A-Z probably has a decent gear.

Thats the only bad spot. I drained the fluid and it looked like apple butter and was full of grit, thank you for the help

That gear that slide there is the 1st/Rev gear. Most likely caused by not getting completely stopped when shifting out of Reverse. Did this tractor do any snow plowing or dirt moving? Might want to look at the inside teeth of that rev/1st gear

I'm thinking you will be OK with that shaft being like that,..as long as you make sure you come to a complete stop before shifting.  Limcoln at A to Z should have one should you want fo replace that shaft.  He is in our Vendor Section.
