enamel 35 #1 Posted September 17, 2023 (edited) Pick up a 1984 gt1600 work horse with the twin 656 briggs on it. Starter is trash. Ive never worked on one of these twins. But from looking at it the flywheel needs removed to change the starter? Also will the basic briggs flywheel puller 19069 work or is there a different way to remove the fly wheel? Thanks Edited September 17, 2023 by enamel

To my knowledge there should be absolutely no reason to remove the flywheel in order to remove the starter. What is the starter doing? If it is hanging up on the fly wheel. The starter is probably fine, but the starter drive gear is toast. Very common issue with the starter plastic drive gears on a B&S engine. If the starter gear is engaged with the flywheel, turn the engine backwards by hand and the gear should disengage the flywheel. If you could post a picture of your starter set up, I may be able to help further. Edited September 17, 2023 by Achto

WHX?? 48,815 #5 Posted September 17, 2023 (edited) If I remember right @Achto I had to pop the flywheel on a "92 Briggs V twin to change out the plastic starter gear. Was a vertical tho... 246H. No big deal as it came off easy enough and wanted to clean underneath anyway. Took longer to pull the tins. The starter gear was 6.98 for TWO in the jungle. Howie 886 #7 Posted September 18, 2023 I think one of those bolts is under the flywheel. They can be taken off without removing the flywheel though. The bolt can be loosen and then feel up under flywheel and rotate engine to a spot on the bottom of the flywheel to allow bolt to be loosened completely. It stays in the starter and the starter can be pulled out. Done this numerous times on customers engine to cut down on the time it takes to do the job. 1
WHX?? 48,815 #8 Posted September 18, 2023 Yep just the starter gear is toast. Would be best to pop the flywheel looks like the motor could use a good cleaning anyway. Easier than removing the starter too since you have all the sheetmetal off. Those two holes either side of the nut should be threaded to accept a standard bar puller.
WHX?? 48,815 #9 Posted September 18, 2023 (edited) Correct Howie but I'm a believer in cleanliness is next to godliness. Pop the flywheel and give everything a good bath & degreasing including the fins. Edited September 18, 2023 by WHX?? 2
enamel 35 #10 Posted September 18, 2023 Ok thanks guys. And you're probably right, it does need a good cleaning and since I'm in there prob do it now lol. Gonna try what Howie said also incase it needs replaced again down the road so I know how to do it with fly wheel on.
Howie 886 #11 Posted September 18, 2023 I agree with the cleaning part. That one did not look too bad and the method I use will work. But saying that I have pulled a lot of shrouds and metal tins over the years to clean out all the accumulated debris!
Achto 27,567 #12 Posted September 18, 2023 This should be the part that you need to fix your starter. https://www.napaonline.com/en/p/SME703455?cid=paidsearch_shopping_dcoe_google&campaign=GSC-Small-Engine-Lawn-Garden&campaign_id=11655985660&adgroup_id=112185060854&adtype=pla_with_promotion&gclid=Cj0KCQjwx5qoBhDyARIsAPbMagAImTLx7uWDbLH43BSXOlwIrHLU-oFzIIJGoyD5s-Ot3wW4AbczK2MaAjsaEALw_wcB&gclsrc=aw.ds& Available other places as well. 1 1

c-series don 8,689 #15 Posted September 18, 2023 I agree with everyone! Yes you can definitely remove the starter without removing the flywheel, however it’s probably best at this point to remove it and give everything a good cleaning. I have changed several of those starter gears over the past 39 years of owning a GT-1800. 2
