GT-14 gas tank cracked

Recommended Posts

cafoose

I replaced the plastic gas tank a while back on my one GT-14. I noticed yesterday that it had large cracks in it that were split all the way through. Last month I took the original tank that was on it before that had hairline cracks in it and I plastic welded it and put it aside. I put the plastic welded tank on yesterday and noticed slight seepage at the welded cracks. Is there anything out there that I can coat the inside of the tank with to seal it up?

POR 15 makes a tank sealer that's pretty good.   I cleaned the tank out and it didn't adhere very well.   Later I had another one that I added gravel to and shook so it would try to scratch the inside.   That tank had better luck so As with most liquids prep is key.

Not sure if he is willing to make another one but @19richie66 made a real nice aluminum tank for his GT14 "Skittles" project. Page 6 post #144

Yes I know and I asked him about it a while ago and I believe he said his son made it. He said he can't get any more made. If someone could make some that would be awesome and I believe there would be a big market for them because of the issues with cracking and the spout nipple breaking off.

WHX??

Nothing out ther for sealer for plastic tanks that I could find.

Best off finding a replacement. Let's give credit where credit is due. We all know @19richie66 is a deadbeat :ychain: and his boy did the welding on them show tanks!

I wish I could make some more but with me living 600 miles from my son, the logistics just don’t work out. Sorry guys.

Send him the dimensions and get him to make some where he's at. I'm sure it would be profitable for him and I would be his first customer :handgestures-thumbupright:

He has the dimensions. He doesn’t have the time. He started a new job last year and now has his second child on the way. I’m still waiting for my fuel filter holders that I gave almost two years ago.

Can you get some dimensions from him? I know a local welder who may be able to make them.

I have the dimensions and the parts list that I used for the neck/ cap and bungs. I’ll send you a drawing and list. I cut all the plate, prepped all the metal, drilled all the holes and he stitched it all together. We built the tanks together but I did most of the legwork. That is why he doesn’t have the time to make them. We had no metal break, no benders …… just cutting wheels and a welder. Yes they could be made easier with a shop full of tools but we didn’t have all that. Believe me, what we were charging for these tanks didn’t cover costs of materials and labor. I did it so I would have a tank for my tractor. Others saw it and wanted one. We built what we could with the time we had together till my move was finalized. If one person had to make them alone, it wouldn’t be profitable. I got my stuff welded for free, hengot practice and he got the money out of the tanks(minus materials) for his wedding.

yes it does. My D project is probably getting ready to be sidelined. Just a fact of life. I need to finish Skittles and my wife’s tractor anyways.
