ebinmaine 67,432 #1 Posted September 11, 2023 Anyone have a favorite garden tractor salvage yard? I found an old post with A to Z and Almost Heaven mentioned. Wondered what and where else is out there?
ri702bill 8,316 #2 Posted September 11, 2023 There WAS such a place in Moosup CT - went there around 2010 to purchase a 36" deck for the 1994 Craftsman 4 Wleel Steering Express we got. Sadly, the land was worth more than the business - went the way of old Drive-in Theaters and short track Speedways - prime locations with the land already cleared - I miss them all. 3

At one time on Red Square he did not get such a warm welcome. Seems I remember some accusing him of some kind of wheel horse slaughterer. just a person making a living supplying good used parts and not junking the machines. 3

Since Almost Heaven is here in Indiana (well, about 3 hours from me), I had to take a closer look (not in person...yet...). Looks like they've grown since the picture posted in the thread Eric pointed to. I just drool and want a closer look when I see something like this - especially the "red" areas. Dang, why can't I zoom in closer!?! 2 1

Wow.... guess I won't be going up there unless I'm desperate for something. Why is it that some people can't see that being rude to your customers isn't good for business?

I know a couple places like that. Both are always priced well outside what thier offerings are worth, and both said their stuff would "rot" if they couldn't get the asking prices. Sadly, that "rot" is typically what they get... Just today I passed one and there are dark rusty tractors where bright red ones sat 10 years ago. Stupidity lives just on the far side of stubborn. Some folks are eat up with it. 3

We had a local automotive salvage yard here 2 towns over. Seems that Old Joe purposely dropped a Model A Ford on his leg to break it just to avoid the draft in WWII. He made his first million during the War, bilking local folks for slick bald tires and used tubes where the patches bridged other patches.... and continued to perfect his craft. He was a cantankerous, bitter old man when I met him, about 15 years before he passed.Once he died, the family was approached by the town to buy their property for Elderly Housing.... No can do, the acreage was so contaminated deeply with numerous liquids from the years of operation.... It sits today, unuseable due to the cleanup cost..........

And sly, crafty, and just plain dishonest sometime accompany it. During WWII a tree surgeon from a nearby town scouted rarely- or never-visited wooded areas (our area was a lot less densely populated at that time). Then he and his son went in, harvested, and sold the prime specimen oak, walnut, and cherry trees for lumber. They weren’t caught for, I think, over two years and had made a bundle of money. However, there were no witnesses or usable evidence so they escaped conviction on grand theft charges. I learned the story from the arborist that evaluated my woodlot after he was stunned to find both a walnut and cherry of specimen quality that would surely have been snatched if found.

I can see both sides of that coin and also been on both. I've had conversations with people about disassembling a good or mostly good tractor. Many (or most) of these parts are not being made anymore. They have to come from somewhere when we're in need. One good running whole tractor can supply the parts to keep quite a few others from becoming useless and obsolete. Sacrifice one for the good of many. 2
ohiofarmer 3,265 #15 Posted September 19, 2023 There was a place that speciialized in Honda Twins from the 70's Mostly CB 125 o 350 cc. They had whole bikes for sale, but when i went there, they just repaired them and no more parts. the guy honestly told me that with customers rooting around and stealing stuff that it was much easier to break those bikes and send the parts back to jJapan where there is a very high demand for the "big" American versions of what they could not buy even though they made them there..He could break one down in three hours and triple his selling price..Nobody can steal stuff either.once he sold it This happened some years ago with the British stuff.Parts are now through the roof.A similar Honda will run rings around the brit stuff and not leak oil. I happen to have an untitled CL350 with a near perfect set of pipes probably worth four times what i gave for the whole bike.. I have been in the hospital for seventeen days {back surgery} and a medical nursing care to administer IV antibiotics until October third. This stuff is not as important to my life anymore.
