Ed Kennell 38,177 #1 Posted September 4, 2023 I just received an official looking email from Ace Hardware. The offer is a free Milwaukee drill for $7.95 shipping. I called Ace and they confirmed it is a scam. 2 6

Beap52 811 #3 Posted September 5, 2023 Don't you just love all the scams? Hardly a week goes by when mom (88 years old) asks if she needs to reply to or do what some scam email instructs her to do. Needless to say, her computer is in the shop from time to time. If I've got time to kill, I'll drag a scam call out until they finally hang up.
953 nut 55,230 #4 Posted September 5, 2023 My wife frequently gets emails telling her that her Amazon account has had a questionable charge made on it. Since we don't have an Amazon account I just tell her to ignore it! Lord only knows how many people fall for this kind of BS.

Eight months after taking control of my 98yo MILs accounting, we are still struggling to cancel bogus life insurance policies ,health insurance, home protection plans, monthly auto pays to onkowns, auto insurance, and a ton of questionable charities. Unfortunately, too many older folks trust everyone and believe everything they see , read, and hear. 2
elcamino/wheelhorse 9,299 #6 Posted September 5, 2023 @Ed KennellI went thru the same thing when my sister-in-law died in Cleveland in 2020. Dealing with estate rules and regs in another state is a PITA. Had to hire a lawyer in Ohio to help me thru the mess. Woman had no money, no insurance and all her collectibles, furniture, etc. was not worth shipping costs, plus battling with the retirement home was a nightmare. i am still getting mail for her plus all the crud in mailbox for my wife who died in 8/2021 . It can be never ending. My brother took over my mother's finances two years before she died . Between church donations and every charity, she was spending over a $1,000.00 a month. Took him over 12 months just to stop the automatic payments to the charities. I know what you are dealing with.
rmaynard 15,461 #7 Posted September 5, 2023 I hate the SPAM phone calls that show a caller ID of someone from my contact list. The caller then identifies themselves as "Betty" calling from "The Medicare". That's when I start playing with them. It's annoying but at the same time fun, know that they can't be tricking some other less savvy senior, while I'm asking about their family and what their plans are for the weekend.
Ed Kennell 38,177 #8 Posted September 5, 2023 I usually don't take the time to mess with their heads. I just tell them you have my phone number and address. Just put my free stuff on the front porch. Or give me your home phone # and I'll call you back around dinner time. 1
