16-38 HXL stalls out in gear

Hello, 

I have a 16-38 HXL that I've removed the deck and use with a dump trailer around the yard.

It's been very reliable with basic maintenance.

Until now.

The engine fires right up, has a solid low idle, but as soon as I take off the break it stalls out.

I had just put some gas in it and just in case it was bad I emptied the tank and put some 97 octane that's a custom mix I use for racing motorcycles.

It's not high enough to burn holes but bikes and chainsaws love it.

There was a pronounced improvement, and it continued to run when I let off the brake, but then stalled again with forward throttle.

Thinking of it, there is a slight chance I may have been a little impatient waiting for the new gas to go through.

I had cut in a fuel switch to allow me to change out the extra fuel filter I put inline, so I drained the tank from there, about 4" from the carb intake.

Anyhow, I'm hoping for some advice in case it continues to die out next week.

What is the model number and serial number of the tractor?

Is there a chance the ignition is being shut off by one of the safety switches?

In the wiring I looked at don't see a brake switch.

The higher the octane, the lower the chance for burning a piston.  For your tractor, any fresh regular gasoline with no more than 10% ethanol will be just fine.  My guess is that you have debris in the carburetor.

@divemaster5734 agree with @gwest_ca  on possible safety switch connection , actually that consistant related failure is what you want , process of elimination to run / stop , usually make a failure spot , a solid / strong finish spot . would also check  all related wiring  / connections , cracked / shorted  etc , might use an alligator  clip  test wire as a jumper connection . easy to drop that carb bowl , refresh the gas filter . basic stuff.  read your octaine set up , its the ethenol that destroyes fuel lines , been adding , STA -BIL fuel to my fuel for years , its a storage additive , no crud in tank / carb / fuel filters , just some ideas . pete

My suspicion is that the bowl on your carburetor has a fair amount of water in it.
