1mor Project 78 #1 Posted August 10, 2023 I had the high bid on a C-195 on Monday. Brought it home yesterday and started to look it over today. Over-all it is pretty presentable. It runs, but a previous owner was a mechanical hack. The wiring is a snake pit. The plugs were finger tight, they came out by hand. Pretty fouled. Anyway I started researching on Red Square. The model number sticker is wiped completely clean. Not stamped tin like the older ones. I saw a post that only 656 were built. 501 in 82/83 and 155 in 1984. It got me wondering how many of the various different models were built each year, and where would you find that kind of information. Back to the tractor . The rear fender is plastic. Nothing is broken off, but it has a number of cracks. Is there a glue that will repair it or maybe one of those rubber bumper "welders" for automotive use? Since the model number is gone, I understand there is a difference in the hydraulic levers that gives a clue to the year. Mine are low on the fender. Sorry that is the best picture I have. This is my first post, but I read the site all the time. I really appreciate all the effort that has gone into putting this site together. Manuals, diagrams, pictures, how to's ,and first hand information and experiences. Thanks in advance!
gwest_ca-(File Mod) 11,048 #2 Posted August 10, 2023 There were just 2 model numbers assigned to the C-195 - 01-19KE01 and 01-19KE02 If the engine serial number is there that may help to identify. The Kohler serial dates are in the front of the engine service manuals or just search our files using the word dating and they will come up.
peter lena 8,635 #3 Posted August 10, 2023 @1mor Project from what I have seen on a c-195 , consider your self very licky , your wiring set up looks nothing like the typical bomb of hacked / corroded , shorted , wiring I have come across , not related , but notice the end start of your , PTO LEVER ? washering that up for a snug , lubricated function , stops problems . a test light , some alligator test wire clips , wil let you find electrical issues , nice spot for a 2 bolt flange bearing , on steering column , battery ground bolt wire to added electrical rectifier grounding , enhances electrical charging . realise what I have just suggested is not in the book , but for me , problem opportunity , is something that I am looking for . consider that spot a gold mine for corrections . the naysayers would be terrified , for me its like going home , would also change out that plastic seat base for a metal one , good luck with it , pete
Thor27 769 #4 Posted August 11, 2023 That is a the early one. As for the seat pan you may want to get ahold of @Adams94 I may regret steering you there as I'm trying to get one too. @peter lena these are different in the back than the other black hoods, a metal pan wont fit over the gas tank.
peter lena 8,635 #5 Posted August 11, 2023 @Thor27 have a c85 plastic pan swapped out many years ago . still have plastic unit , do not know what ever model / year the metal one I picked up , but it looks better than the original , and just bolted on right in place . think a lot of w/h horse parts are interchangeable , did a tweaking on a seat set up on a tractor , recently sold , would not fit on original mount , drilled 4 holes , changed base mount and also lowered the frame height , for a roomier leg fit , under steering wheel . pete
Thor27 769 #6 Posted August 11, 2023 Pete, a C-195 is different, the framework for the 3 point sits where the fuel tank is on other C-××s. The unique 195 tank fills the "batwing" in the plastic fender. 😀 If I was to guess, I'd say the 195 was on the drawing board a while and probably the reason for all of the blackhoods getting ugly fenders. peter lena 8,635 #7 Posted August 11, 2023 @Thor27 bought my c 85 new in 82 , never cared for the rear fender set up , looked out of place to me , years later had a chance to get a metal one from a newer model , don,t even remember wich one , direct bolt on , with the look I wanted , no problems , have a good one , pete
