Racer5x 14 #1 Posted August 9, 2023 I’m currently redoing my 8hp 4 speed no name and I need a new set of tie rods. I was curious what do you guys recommend for replacements? All advice/help are appreciated as always!
ebinmaine 67,445 #2 Posted August 9, 2023 Easiest way to get new tie rods is to purchase a set from Lowell at Wheelhorse Parts And More. Several of us have made our own from HEIM JOINTS. Far stronger. 3

ri702bill 8,316 #4 Posted August 9, 2023 The adjustable style, either store bought or homemade, is the only way to go. They allow you to correct the toe-iin and better center the steering wheel. Most use just RH threads on both ends - accuracy is the pitch of the thread - one revolution of the joint. Cars use RH and LH ends to get exactly what you want. If they wear out, you replace just the ends.
Lee1977 6,657 #5 Posted August 10, 2023 (edited) I put a set of good quality heims joints on my C-120 in 1989 they are still tight. It was my main mower for 40 years, bought a 520 to help it out. put a set of heims joints on it. Here is the set of heims I put on the 1989 520. . . Jon Paulsen 290 #6 Posted August 11, 2023 Any of these above or otherwise known to fit a 416-8?

If you purchase the OE type from Lowell, just verify with him.
peter lena 8,617 #8 Posted August 11, 2023 @Racer5x agree with @ri702bill, @Lee1977 @ebinmaine on the heim joints , never had one fail , often try one in any movement problem spot , for easier motion and reliability . worth a try , pete
peter lena 8,617 #9 Posted August 16, 2023 @Racer5x while you are in the heim joint mode , might try pto lever end to drive cone , use a 3/8 x24 die nut , right over the original 3/8x16 threading , use cutting oil , 3/8 heim x24 , threads right over , also put one on my clutch rod linkage for a trial , never failed or broke , very smooth , solid . btw that battery area is a gold mine for improvements , pto lever start , added cable to battery grounding bolt , to engine / frame corner , improves RECTIFIER GROUNDING , improve trouble spots , pete
