1960 model 400 steering wheel repair

Recommended Posts

steelsmith

My 8 year old grandson has a WH model 400 that is in need of a steering wheel repair, someone along the years has built the wheel up with tape and now my wife thinks it needs to be redone right.

My question is if there is someone (person /company) that could recover/make the wheel right?

we are not looking to restore it to like new just want it to look better then it does with all the tape on it.

looking on the web but so fare not came up with the right words to find what I need.

Thanks for any and all help

Joe

Got a picture of the steering wheel?  The choice of repair method will depend on what the condition of the steering wheel is in.

I believe “Eastwood” do a kit for steering wheel repairs. In the UK it’s sold by the company, “Frost”, who market all types of products for automotive restoration. “Eastwood”, I think is an American company?

PC-7 is a great workable epoxy that hardens like steel!  Don’t use too much, just enough to fill and clean it up.  It can be worked with power sanders, files, Emory cloth, etc.  Given your handle, I’d believe you could finish it as needed :handgestures-thumbupright:

Gotta keep this guy in favorites.

Thanks @Wild Bill 633 this I did not know. And right here in WI !

Wonder if he can do the hen's teeth flat  ones on '62 '63 models?

I just did one with PC-7 at the advice of @oliver2-44 and it worked nicely. Lots of hand sanding but sands easily. Finished by a couple  of coats of bedliner.

Some have used body filler with good results.

Another option is replace it with a new one. The replacement is splined for JDs but can be bored to 3/4. @Achto used one on a resto.

This is the wheel that I used on my 701. Like Jim stated, I drilled the splined 11/16" hole out to 3/4" then cross drilled it for the roll pin.

If you repair it with PC7 or JB Weld epoxy, I’ve learned you can spray some place spray paint into the epoxy mix and it will help hide the crack. Buff the wheel wig red, then white rouge using a cloth wheel. I got some cone shaped cloth wheels for my drill of the bay that work well

Thanks to all of you for the info , I'm going to give Evergreen a call and se if they can do a 13"wheel. this wheel must have a half case of black electrical tape on it, so I don't know what the wheel under all of it may look like.

AS this is not a 100%restore just a driver around the yard restore I can go up to a 14" wheel and not tell the boss, will see where  I end up going from here.

once more thank to all of you for your help.

will post a update once I know what I've done.

:text-yeahthat:I have some that are way beyond   PC7 or anything.

Hence the bedliner Ollie. After the first coat it revealed some small cracks & imperfections I missed. The bed liner filled them right in.

! used a dremel with a sand drum to highlight & sand the finger grooves.

@Racinbob did one with bedliner that looks nice he's the one who skooled me on it.

Here it is. It wasn't totally down to just a bare metal rim but the plastic was cracked and gouged pretty bad. I used bondo and sanding. Then Dupont bed spray in the black can, not the blue can. I tried the blue can as well as Rusteolum on other projects and didn't care for them. I like the looks and feel of this stuff. It's been about five years now and still holding up well. :)

I hear ya Bob. I did this 400 oh golly 5 years or better ago. It was not cracked or anything but if you even looked at it crooked it left black stains on your hands. Kinda like anti seize ain't that right @Pullstart.

I don't remember what brand it was but it worked after a small test. Gave a nice rubberized grip and sealed all the black inside...

The product I used on the 701 above was this product ... 1st pic ...Left a nice glossy coat but not the rubberized grip. They had several brands so it was enni mennie mighty moe given my CRS.

Still satisfactory so all is good.

Up Date

I called Evergreen  and talked with then, I told them what I had a 13+'' wheel and asked if they could recoat it.

They had to check and would call me back, less then 5 mins and we were talking again, But the smallest mold they have is for a 14" wheel.

So they couldn't help me  this time, But I will keep there contact info for the next time around.
