Tonytoro416 1,034 #1 Posted August 7, 2023 So this has been a topic on here many times before and I just have never seen anything that is desirable to me as far as muffler options go. I love the Nelson mufflers but basically hate every configuration I have seen this far. They are ridiculously over priced and we haven’t even touched on mufflers to the twin cylinder engines. I recently cut a rotted muffler apart and made my own and so far I am happy with it but it was very time consuming. At least for me anyhow. I’m sure my homemade muffler is much heavier than a stick option as well but supported it from the bottom. As anyone else drove down this road?
Pullstart 62,838 #2 Posted August 7, 2023 (edited) Nice work! We’ve built our own exhaust systems many times here, but I can’t say I’ve built my own muffler ever. @Achto has built some… Here’s one we pieced together during Covid times… Edited August 7, 2023 by Pullstart Photos 2
Pullstart 62,838 #3 Posted August 7, 2023 This might be the closest I’ve gotten to building a muffler I guess. Cut and convoluted washers welded into a tube system hushed it quite a bit.
rmaynard 15,436 #4 Posted August 7, 2023 (edited) My feeling is that Wheel Horse researched, tested, and developed mufflers that they thought were the best design for a particular model at the time. I really do prefer the Nelson's on my C-series. Unfortunately, that muffler's no longer available. If they were to be reproduced again at a reasonable price, I would buy a couple. Tonytoro416 1,034 #8 Posted August 7, 2023 Because of how I wanted the muffler to sit the intake into the muffler is pretty close to the exit. So I gutted the muffler and made diverters and baffles to direct gases towards the rear then back towards the front and exit. I wished I took pictures as I was building but I got in the zone and just went with it 1
Thor27 767 #9 Posted August 8, 2023 I'll be following along to see what you guys come up with, I got as far as cutting apart a c-175 muffler with the intent of re creating it.... not sure it is worth the effort. I like original parts, but I think those days are running out.
ranger 1,750 #10 Posted August 8, 2023 (edited) Here are the parts for the C161 stack. Stainless steel, got to fire up the tig when I get the chance and weld it together. I did hold the ‘Silencer’ part over the open pipe, it did reduce the noise considerably. The black baffle slides inside the straight pipe if needed. All parts off of that ‘Bay’ site! Going to weld a couple of ‘Tabs’, one on the bend for a brace, one on the open end to carry a nice shiny ‘flap’ Edited August 8, 2023 by ranger
