WHX?? 48,815 #1 Posted August 6, 2023 (edited) Always a fav show of mine and this year no different. I joined last year as a member of the club and did abit of work on the grounds. Next year maybe abit more as I ease into it. This year they had the BIG 150 Case brought in. More on the history of it later but they lay claim to the biggest steamer in North America. Lots of it on FB for you FBers. So story has it ther was none remaining out of nine or so built but a privateer copied a remaining boiler. Got the orginal drawings from Case and built one in his garage. Well maybe not his garage but had to buy a machine shop and a foundry to build it. @Wild Bill 633 help me out here on the factuals. More show pics to follow... Club says about 4000 to come in through the gate all weekend on an average show... this year hopefully 4-5000 a day for Case feature. Edited August 7, 2023 by WHX?? SylvanLakeWH 25,547 #2 Posted August 7, 2023 Very cool. One question - Can it handle a 60" WH mower deck?
squonk 41,079 #3 Posted August 7, 2023 Case was the feature at our steam show last year. This year is Oliver Hart-Parr.

Achto 27,569 #5 Posted August 7, 2023 (edited) I'll throw a few of my pic's up. First up this little Avery. This Rat Rod / doodle bug was quite interesting. Really liked the rare engine that was used in it. A great cut away display of a threshing machine. It was powered by small gas engine for slow speed movement. Another builder reaching for the extreme. There were a lot of really nice Case displays. One that caught my eye was this Case automobile. A pic of the 150hp Case steam traction engine hooked on to an eliminator. Edited August 7, 2023 by Achto 5
8ntruck 6,998 #6 Posted August 7, 2023 Was that 150 Case the one that was plowing with a 28 bottom plow while back?

The 14" bore by 14" stroke produces 150hp and 5000 yes 5000 ft lbs of torque, I'm quite sure it would not even know that 60" deck was attached to it. Bad part might be that the deck would not extend out past the rear wheel, or the front wheels for that matter. BTW at 5000 ft lbs of torque, this gives the Case 150hp steam tractor the highest factory torque rating of any tractor ever produced to date. 8ntruck 6,998 #13 Posted August 7, 2023 That 5000 lb ft of torque is also delivered at ZERO rpm.
JoeM 7,873 #14 Posted August 7, 2023 Nice show! Got to put that on bucket list. The local steam show is this coming weekend. They got 100 acres and tear up about half with old equipment. I plan to make it out and if I remember to get pics. http://nationalpike.com/index.html That old hemi brought back memories. My Dad and Uncle re-ringed one in the backyard when I was about 7, one spark of my interest in mechanical things. Those belt driven shops are cool. I was good friends with the caretakers son of the local one about a mile away. Those private visits were nice got to mess around a bit with the blacksmith stuff. This one was built around 1900 and shutdown in 1965. Owners just locked the doors and left. It is like stepping back in time. Lots of hard work in those places. https://riversofsteel.com/experiences/tours/machine-shop-tour/ 4 3

Wild Bill 633 845 #23 Posted August 8, 2023 I attended the banquet on Saturday night and Kory Anderson had an hour presentation with Q&A after. There were (7) 150 Case Road Locomotives built in the early 1900's and none of them survived. The issue was the engine produced so much torque that the drivetrain failed. Cast iron was the material used for the gears, which is brittle, and the loads were to much for the gears. Also, the centerlines of the crankshaft, intermediate shaft and differential shaft were not in line causing side loading and another failure point. Ductile iron was discovered in 1943, which is more suitable for this application. Kory was able to get a copy of the blueprints of the 150 Case from Case and created CAD solid models of the parts. The CAD models were used to perform FMEA (load/stress) analysis and create CNC patterns. The 110 HP Case was manufactured after the 150 and Case changed the design of the shafts to be in line to eliminate the side loading. Kory changed the design of the shafts on the 150 to be in line and used ductile iron which eliminated the failures of the original 150. It took Kory 18 months to build the 150. 3 4

Achto 27,569 #25 Posted August 9, 2023 (edited) There was a lot of hoopla about how big & heavy the Case 150 was. Don't know what all the to do was about, heck it fit right on my 6 1/2' x 12' single axle trailer. It pays to over build.
