c120 pto clutch

I was told when i bought my c120 that it was a 1976 mold.  So here is my issue, I was mowing this evening and started noticing smoke coming out of the end of the PTO clutch snap ring and ball bearing is located.  Looking at a parts manual from online the bearing part number is 5196 and the snap ring is part number 936032.  I have not taken it apart yet to let cool off.  Also the nose of the housing-clutch and pulley has gotten hot enough that it has turned black.  I have not worked on this tractor other than general maintenance so any ideas, suggestion, or tips on what I am looking at would be welcomed.  Also are there things as apart of routine maintenance that I should add to my list that would help me keep my tractor running.  Thank you.

There is a ball bearing and a roller bearing inside the PTO bell.  Sounds like your lubed for life bearings in there came to the end of their life.  Both beaings are still available from several sources.  I think the snap ring is a standard size.

 

The PTO bell is removed by loosening the accessory drive belt, removing the retaining pin in the PTO lever rod and the pin in the stub shaft in the center of the arch.  Rotate the arch aside, and pull the PTO bell off of the crankshaft.  Clean and inspect the race on the crankshaft where the roller bearing rides to make sure it is not damaged.

 

Replace the bearings in the PTO bell and you should be back in business.

 

You need to keep those two bearings greased with a good high temperature grease, such as Lucas Red and Tacky.  Check them when you change the engine oil.  Go easy on the grease on the roller bearing, as too much will leak out and contaminate the PTO clutch faces.

 

 to the forum.  Lots of good folks here that will chime in with advice.  Collectively, I think we've probably broken and repaired anything that can be broken and repaired on a Wheel Horse.

If you are following the maintenance schedule outlined in the manual , you should be good.          If you don't have one, it can be found in our manuals section.

 

One item that may not be in the manual is to retorque the rear hub set screws.

The PP204RR6 bearing that squonk listed are all over the enternet as John Deere spindle bearings JD9296 or JD9236 as P204RR6  ID 3/4" , OD  1.7805",  width 25/36"  Metric as ID 19.05 mm, OD 45.225 mm,  width 15.49 mm.

@michael hall while you are in the area , it would be relatively easy , to check muel belt drive bearings , reccomend , using big, box wrench on end nut , while its still attatched to tractor , mechanical advantage , easy . as you take it apart , carefully lay it out , so it goes back the same way , the inner bearings can be easily repacked witha hi temp grease , carefully remove wide rubber side shields , thin putty knife / or small flat / fine scewdriver wipe out / carb cleaner flush , repack with lucas green grease , replace side shields . reasemble to  part lay out , probably a new belt . this basic , re grease will add a movement  easemet connection to your deck . would also go over deck . for movement areas , regrease spindles , check out bottom of deck for build up , blade condition , corrosion / cracking . enough to do for now, lots of other detailing , to do , hope you do some of it , pete
