Real quick question can you take a ignition out of a truck or a vehicle and put it on a Wheel Horse

Typically cars/trucks use a non resister type coil. ( but could also use an external resister)

Kohler coils have a built in resister.

You can buy an external resister for the truck coil

A coil without a resister there will prematurely burn out the points but it will definitely fire it up

Hope this helps. That's about the extent of my knowledge when it comes to those coils

That's an Onan engine. You can find Harley coils cheaper than Onan sells them.

What exactly does it need ?

I'm wanting to put a key ignition on it it so its not a universal key. I'm trying to get it to where I can take a key that goes in a truck and use it on my tractor.

Do you have the ignition switch already?

You can try to figure out how the wires connect to each other in the different key positions.

You'll need + battery in and that needs to send power to the coil in the start position and turn it off in the off. It needs to keep power in the start position

Then you will need to find a starter wire that only has + battery power in the start position and it needs to stop in the run position

A switch like what @wallfish showed would be the way to go.

The key switch in most cars & trucks do not have any electrical terminals on them. They are only used to move linkage that is connected to a switch box which is mounted lower down on the steering column.

You would have to find one from an early model dash mount ignition. All steering column mounted switches  will work like the Ford switch that I posted above.

No, what I'm saying is GM, Ford, Mopar switches that are mounted on the steering column of  a car or truck will not work. They do not have any electrical terminals on them, they only move linkage that is connected to a large switch box which is mounted lower on the steering column.

Maybe just have someone 3D print you an overlay for an Indak key and call it a day?  Of the hundreds of show tractors that have the same key, I’ve never heard of someone having a tractor stolen because of the universal key.

Handy Don

A simple trick to discourage opportunistic “users” is to add a toggle switch behind the hoodstand that cuts off the power to the ignition switch.

Or even put it in the dash with an odd label like “auxiliary”.

:text-yeahthat:                     At most shows you will see the keys left in the ignition switch!

The likelihood of being able to buy two ignition switches keyed alike for any make vehicle is slim to none. A good locksmith could probably modify a key to work in both but that would drive the price up. You can find Security System switches with removable keys on :techie-ebay:or at shops that sell car audio systems.

We had a kid’s quad with a remote shut off switch too.  Keep the ‘mote in your pocket and shut ‘er down.

Or use simply a Pullstert Engine.

The most be too lazy to use a simple Pullstart.

😎

that‘s the cheapest Way... imho
