I'll take a stab at it - mid 70's "no name" tractor - what does the tag on the fan shroud say??? ...

Well.

Kohler small block. Likely an 8 HP.

Looks like an 8 speed transmission.

Also has holes for a hood ornament which should place it before 1975.

I'd say 1973 8 HP, 8 speed or a slightly earlier 8 like a 70 to 72 Raider.

@mower

In the last picture, it looks like the  black and silver ID tag is on the hood stand, below the steering wheel, in front of the lift lever.

Tell us the numbers on it and we can identify it.

I find that my wife being at home is a severe hindrance to my acquisition of parts or projects. I can usually semi-hide stuff if I can get it home and put away while she's not here,  but she's on me like white on rice if she's here.  Always something about not needing more junk, get rid of stuff, etc...

When you can get away with transmission in bathtub ... you know ya made it.

In your case, Eric, it could just as easily been your woman who put the trans in there.  Or running parts through the dishwasher.  Hanging painted tins on the clothesline to dry. Etc.    You are a lucky man.

Luckily my wife is civil and I can pretty much buy 15 and she wouldn’t care.  Sometimes she comes down there to get in my way but I enjoy her company as I don’t have any shop buddies that come over.  My 20x20x10 shop with a 18x25 awning on the side is plenty big enough for all the “crap” I dig up. This is my latest project.  I will be picking the new horse up Friday afternoon as soon as I can!!!  Hopefully he does not sell it out from under me!

BTW she knows if I need more parts storage half her closet will be gone!  No need for video evidence!  :violence-blades:

Yep that's the one.

1973 was known as the "no-name" year.

1968-72 the Herd had names like Charger, Raider, Electro.

1974 up. They were the "letter series".

A. B. C. D.

1973 carries no such designation.

Your new Horse is simply called a '73 8 8.

I’m no expert but I am pretty sure water is not suppose to be dripping from the rear end….  Looks like I will be tearing into my first rear end/gearbox down the road… :confusion-helpsos:

Believe it or not this isn't a huge concern.

If you can tell one end of a box wrench from a ball peen hammer you'll be just fine.

@stevasaurus has a bunch of good videos out there.

I made one about splitting the case open.

Easy peasy.

Do you take boxes apart with this said “box wrench”?  :)

I may have to consult the expert in this case as he was showing me how to weedeat today!

Anyone tell me what horse this is?  I may be able to buy for 75$.. Would it be worth it?  They say the rear end is locked up and motor has not been ran in some time....  Thoughts?

The wrong engine, but it looks to be a ‘64 model.  I’d say it’s worth it!
