Muffler replacement ideas for 416-8 Kohler single cylinder?

Recommended Posts

ebinmaine

Our Wally Digger Backhoe needs a muffler.

This machine has the original Wheelhorse muffler that lays horizontally with a single input off an S shaped piece of iron as an adapter from engine to muffler.

I believe that adapter outlet points straight out.

I'm thinking about using a Gravely replacement type so it'll be lightweight and reasonably quiet.

Any other suggestions?

Love stacks but this is a FEL.

No room for a stack.

Here's the amount of space and pipe sizing.

Tape is pointing to the outlet for reference.

At shutdown the machine backfires LOUDLY.

Having had issues with mufflers causing that in the past I got to looking at it.

There's an extra hole on the outside at one end, a soft spot on the inside at the other, and it's very rusty crunchy overall soft.

Whether it solves the backfire or not this muffler is gonzo...

Have you had the head off to decarbon and inspect the valves?

No sir not yet.

That'll be done this fall/winter with other work we do.

I’d put at least a one dollar Bob wager on that being an issue…

All of mine do that unless I throttle back to idle for a few seconds before shutdown.

I see @wallfish mentioned full throttle. I guess it's how rich the old Kohler is running at both ends of the throttle range.

I actually do both.

I bring it down to idle. Wait 5 or 10 seconds. Turn the key off then bring the throttle up to full.

So this the same muffler I just replace that you gave me input on.  I purchase the "Rotary 8284 Clamp-On Muffler for Kohler" from the A..zonian website.  Only problem is took a couple of weeks to arrive.  I had to buy a 1.5 ID coupler and another muffler clamp to attach it to the exhaust outlet pipe on the Magnum 12.

If I remember correctly, turbochargers work as rudimentary mufflers.
