I had an uncle that was one of the survivors of that tragedy. He passed away about 40 years ago. He would never say a word about the war and as a youngster my parents told us boys to never say a word about the war when he was around.

We have a friend in Greencastle, Indiana whose father was a sailor  on the USS Indianapolis.  I also worked with his grandson one summer.

Here is the article from a newspaper in Illinois about Mr. Don   McCall passing. In 2017.

@Lane Ranger  my boy scout base was at a VFW  hall, was regularly surrounded by vets , they were always involved in the details of packing  / loading / supplies  for our overnight or longer camps. we had navy cooks at our summer camps , taught you how to buy ,prep , serve meals . when you went into a , veterans home , some part of it was set up like an actual military boarding . submariners , were typically dark green paint going to the cellar , battery lights on the walls , tabeling , etc ,  salvator  giachio , little guy in stature , tail gunner B17  , 28 missions , DFC ,A/M, S/S ,PH .  another time , pete
