Short story about honoring our National Anthem. The crew members I worked with at the power plant were all military veterans. When we were on the midnight shift we always listened to a particular radio station that would play a recording of our National Anthem at five am, we would all stand with hands over our hearts while it was playing. A new manage had been assigned to our plant and he was making the rounds of all the departments to introduce himself and give us feedback on his observations. He came to our workstation at about 4:45 am. He was in the middle of his presentation when we all stood up in unison, he thought we were walking out on him. He began to ask what was going on and was SHUSHED by several of us. Once he realized that the National Anthem was being played he too put hand over heart and from that day forward he would stop by at 5:00 am when we were working the mid-shift. 5 3
953 nut 55,232 #27 Posted September 19, 2023 Yesterday's PT session was awesome! First the therapist put a few small items on the floor and had me go around picking them up while using the walker. I did well on that one then she had me walk with a large base cane while she had a firm grip on the belt around me. We walked fifty feet and rested, did that four times and though I was a bit wobbly it felt soooooooooooooo good. Each day gets a little better, thank you Lord. 6 5
midpack 866 #28 Posted September 19, 2023 I remember the first time I walked about 10' (with a walker) in my recovery from a heart procedure that went bad. It was very exciting! It DOES get better, keep up the good work! 1

ohiofarmer 3,276 #41 Posted October 16, 2023 I wasn't aware of your situation until you commented on mine. It's a heck big a thing to be suddenly faced with such a challenge. Then being dependent on other people at least for a while becomes an acquired skill I guess. I am very familiar with your method of leaning against things I was making great progress until my body reminded me that once I reduced painkillers that there was a great need to be more careful. I can still walk and get excersise but sitting in a standard chair can give me fits. God bless. 1
953 nut 55,232 #42 Posted October 16, 2023 When I started PT in early September some preliminary evaluation was done. Friday (the 13th) a reevaluation was done and all of the strength readings were at least fifty percent better than the preliminary measurements. Look out Mister Universe. Today's PT session was great. The therapist had me walking without a walker or cane. I was walking between two parallel bars about four feet apart and on the third lap (about eight feet) I didn't have to touch the bars until I stopped at the end. I wasn't too steady on my feet, definitely not ready to take a walk in the park but it felt so good. 5

953 nut 55,232 #48 Posted November 5, 2023 Thanks for reminding me to give an update. Each day gets a little better than the last. I am becoming more independent which allows my wife to enjoy herself rather than having to chofer me to PT and other places. This morning I was preparing a cheese omelet when my wife walked into the kitchen. She asked me where my walker was and I pointed to the other end of the kitchen. I'm not steady enough to go out in public without the walker but can manage OK in the house as long as I am near something to correct my balance as needed. I will be seeing a Neurologist in a couple of weeks to determine what can be done to correct the numbness on my left side. 2 6 1
