312 8 has no power when trying to start

Recommended Posts

My 312 8 has no power.  I tried to start it, pressed in the clutch, sat on the seat, turned the key and nothing.  So far I have replaced the fuses and put in a new battery ( which it needed anyway).  I think it is one of the safety switches, either on the clutch or seat  but how do I find out which one, it is?  Then how do I fix it?  Thank you for your help.

Have the tractor model number and serial number? With those we can link you to some good wiring diagrams that display what each circuit does and how it does it.

I used to have and sometimes still have this problem. I jiggle the PTO handle so the deck is lifted and lowered several times. That usually does the trick.

You could check to see if the wires are attached to the safety switches and if they are actually being pressed (activated) by the seat, the clutch, and the PTO lever.

If all connections look OK, then you will need a VOM to check function of the switches.

Be aware the problem could also be in the ignition switch or solenoid and the connecting wiring.

I would check the solenoid and starter first by connecting a jumper from the battery + terminal to the small center lug on the solenoid.

Interlock switches in the clutch, seat, PTO, oil sentry, maybe neutral switch if so equipped.

Thank you.  That is exactly what it was.  I never use the pto,  so I never thought about it.  That'e what happens when you let children play on your tractor.  Thanks again.
