417 Carb Help

Recommended Posts

Dreamcatcher

Hello All,

I am finally getting around to putting new fuiel lines and cleaning the carb on my 417 A.

Looks like the previous owner has 5/16 inch fuel line but per what I found on the forum, these should be all1/4 inch fuel line.  I've purchased a good amount of clamps and line.  I

I'm having trouble figuring out this last linkage on the carb so I can physically remove it from the motor.  It had not just bits of stuff in the bowl but black chunks.  I i'd like to remove it to give it a better cleaning that just a sprayout of the bowl and float area.

Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

That linkage should just pop down out of the governor arm. They a bit of friction fit and I always keep some of those plastic keepers in the shop for when they need to be replaced. The black chunks in the bowl would be fuel line that's deteriorating from the inside. Smaller bits are surely elsewhere in the carb. This is why it is good practice to put your fuel filter as close to the carb as you can.

@JCM Jim we've messed with these. Do you remember how that comes off?

Definitely a necessity.

You'll want to spray through every orifice you can find, all different directions.

I use brake clean or my newly acquired ultrasonic cleaner.

I use and recommend OE KOHLER rebuild kits. The gaskets appear to be a better quality than most cheap aftermarket ones.

That fuel hose will need replacement from the tank forward along with a new fuel tank outlet which is the initial screen filter.

@peter lena has brought up using a metal line for the span part way.

I realize the linkage is pretty springy and durable but are you saying that I can be a little forceful with it and it should pop out of the hole?  Any special angle needed?

Also does anyone have an opinion on the  5/16 back to 1/4 inch fuel line swap?

I'd measure the attachment points of both carb and fuel tank.

Could have been changed.

Right. Here is a picture of one on the bench if you can zoom in and see how the linkage is held in

I would have to look at the 417 or 420 to be sure. Thought it might be a z bend ?

It may very well be on the throttle lever end, but the governor end definitely doesn't look to be a z bend and should just pry out of that lever.

Thank you all.  the linkage just popped off with a little more mustard.  I changed all of the fuel lines and the petcock under the tank.  The petcock was leaking.  I sprayed out the carb well especially the bowl and float area.  The bowl seal is not great looking.  Does anyone know the part number for the seal?

Best to get the whole kit and replace everything that comes in it. That way you'll have a new needle and seat as well.

Kohler carb rebuild kit is

I'm happy to report the carb cleanout, new fuel tank petcock, , new fuel lines, and new fuel filter have resulted in an easy starting horse.
