1972 Wheel Horse Raider 14

Recommended Posts

JMBoriss

I've been looking for a wheel horse for a while, to use, eventually restore and then pass down to my son.  Yesterday this Wheel Horse came up on Marketplace and I picked it up for $425.  I absolutely love it.  Runs great, seems to have original tires and it seems to be in pretty good shape.  I mowed my entire lawn and it didn't miss a beat.

I've searched the forums and have downloaded all the manuals I could, however I was not able to find a user manual specific to the Raider 14, only 8,10 and 12.

Questions:

Does anyone happen to have a .pdf copy before I buy a hard copy off ebay of a user manual specific to the Raider 14?

I'd like to lube all the moving parts, sharpen the blades, change all filters, oil etc. before my next mow.  I prefer a mulching kit but I don't want to modify the deck in anyway.  Any thoughts on that? However mowed great, and lawn looks great without the mulching.

Please see below pictures for the next questions:

When turning left, the deck shifts and the deck level wheel (that is all chewed up) rubs on the left rear tire.  I assume because the front mount "rod" isn't securly in the holder?  See picture.  Any thoughts there?

On the front manual PTO, I can't get that metal piece (that looks like a boat sail) to stay in the little metal pulley, any ideas there?

Anything you experts recommend I do before continued use?  I plan to keep this thing forever and thankfully I have the means and desire to put however much money into this as I want.  What would you do to it if you were me?

Excellent find.

Take a minute or a bunch and peruse this thread:

A lot of it won't apply. Much of it will.

That'll give you an excellent starting point.

You are quite welcome. As it explains in the first page of that thread I got the idea when I was trying to find a list someone else had put together.

It's been very handy.

I tried to tighten the belt, per the manuals and There seems to be a lot of slack in the belt even with it tightened as far as it can go.  I put the deck back on, adjusted everything and still seems loose?  Could the belt just be that worn and stretched?  Please see pictures with mower deck raised and lowered of the cam assembly.

Should the rear of the deck be above or below the slanted part.  Please see picture with yellow circle drawn on it.

Finally, the parking brake, no matter how I adjust it, it doesn't stay engaged.  Am I missing a piece?  Please see video.

Thank you!

Please see video regarding parking brake.  The level doesn't stay engage after releasing the clutch/brake pedal.  No amount of adjusting seems to help.

Is that correct?

The yellow circled set up is correct.

Same parking brake on my L107.  Father bought it new in 1967 in 56 years have never been able to make it useful.  Loose enough to engage won't hold the tractor, tight enough to hold cannot engage it with out a struggle...

Looks like some sort of extra plate under the 2 bolts holding the brake band...try leaving it out...

are you sure it is the correct belt???

@pfrederi Thank you, I'll try removing that plate under the two both.  Good point on the belt, no idea if it is even the correct belt at all.  I'll order a new one.  Can you help me confirm this:  I think I have the 48" mower deck 5-1201, 5-1202.  I looks like it calls for a 107" v-belt to drive the 3 blades and a 71" v-belt from the PTO.  I'm new to all this, do I just order any v-belt those sizes?  I may just buy the entire kit from aztractor.

They are both 1/2" wide belts so the Gates Belt numbers would be 6871  and 68107

@pfrederi Looks like I have the 5-1000 42" deck.  I'll find the right belts.  On the PTO, which pulley does the mower drive belt go on?  The pulley closest to the engine (biggest)?

Just as a check, before you spend money on new belts take your existing one to a NAPA, Tractor Supply, etc and have them measure them. If there actually the right size then we could help figure out where the problem is.

Measuring a used belt can be misleading.  The outside length of the belt may measure correctly (in this case 71")...however a worn belt will sit much lower in the pulley grooves making it effectively longer than a new 71" belt...

Yes belt goes on the inner next to engine pulley
