Achto 27,590 #1 Posted July 17, 2023 Just wondering how many gardeners have been a victim of "Peppergate" this year? @WHX??, I know you were a victim of Peppergate. Apparently this is not isolated to Wisconsin. I purchased plants that were marked as poblano peppers this spring, same flat, same label in with the peppers. Well.... I have a mixture of poblano and cubanelle peppers.. One of my "jalapeno" plants is actually a serrano plant. So far I'm not too upset about my experience with Peppergate, actually found out that cubanelle's taste pretty darn good when stuffed. Taste kind of like a sweet banana pepper. I just added some of my surprise serrano's to the stuffing mix to jack the heat up a little. Cooked up some of my surprise cubanelle peppers stuffed with chicken, cream cheese, black beans, tomato, chopped surprise serrano peppers and cheddar cheese on the smoker, Added a little sour cream and home made salsa for toppings for a most excellent meal. A little info on 2023 "Peppergate". https://www.housedigest.com/1333331/peppers-mislabeled-peppergate-seed-jalapeno/ 4
WHX?? 48,821 #2 Posted July 18, 2023 (edited) Very good article Dan... thanks for sharing. I am highly disappointed. Not only am I disappointed but lessens my opportunities to try various stuffed pepper recipes. Farmer's market it is I guess. Fortunately Stoneridge ( a local supermarket guys) had some nice Blonos. At this point I have no idea what these are ... much too small to be Cubans?? I have quite a crop of them and never heard of them (cubannelles) till Dan brought it up. Maybe dehydrate some and use them in chili? This is my first year trying to grow them in pots. Learning curve here. Pics to follow... I used some filler soil that evidently had morning glory seeds in it. The deer loved them but never touched the peppers. When we're at tractor shows for length I move them where the auto sprinklers hit them. Edited July 18, 2023 by WHX?? 1
WHX?? 48,821 #3 Posted July 18, 2023 I can only guess that the whole peppergate thing is based on 'can't find good help since covid'... Save some seeds out of your best peppers Dan... try seeding our own next year. 1

I have a variety of peppers growing in close proximity to each other. Might have some cross pollenating going on.. This won't effect this years fruit but could cause some mutant seeds.
SylvanLakeWH 25,580 #5 Posted July 18, 2023 (edited) Hhhmmm... Kinda sounds like what happens when green, orange or yellow tractors get too close to our little red fillies... Time for action. @Pullstart needs to design and build mobile seed bases where they can grow pure seeds without cross contamination issues and then drop them directly into the soil. powered of course... JoeM 7,874 #8 Posted July 18, 2023 May have been a victim of tag switching? Some like screwing around to mess with certain stores. The farmer market here is the best pepper place. Prices not to bad. I love those stuffed cubanelle with 50/50 ground beef and pork, rice, egg and tomato soup. and a side of mashed taters.

A store tag switching to get rid of plants that don't sell? 2 hours ago, Achto said: Those might be Big Jim's I don't think so big jims 10" pods...these are barely 3 most only 2" The small pods and light green color is what tipped me off I ain't in Blonoville anymore... Yum ... will have to try that. Are you going to do a sampler tray at UTC show Dan? For medicinal purposes only ya know. Tried one ... not sweet. No heat at all and somewhat bitter. See what happens when more ripen. Edited July 18, 2023 by WHX??
WHX?? 48,821 #12 Posted July 21, 2023 (edited) No idea what these are... Too small for Anaheims... closest I could come is what they call a Shushito. https://www.google.com/search?q=sushito+pepper&oq=sushito+pepper&aqs=chrome..69i57.15031j0j7&client=ms-android-uscellular-us-revc&sourceid=chrome-mobile&ie=UTF-8#vhid=2jiv3_KtQUbHDM&vssid=l Edited July 21, 2023 by WHX??

Both are wonderful. The seed I got this season are both poblano ish peppers. They look fine, hopefully have some heat however definitely not what I ordered. Scotch bonnets are nice looking but zero heat. I keep trying to find them as well. Very much dislike buying produce from the store and just as much of a crap shoot heat wise. The best seeds are the ones passed down form my father/grandfather. Dwindling supply though.

Very sought after in my garden but only ended up with one out of the 3 plants that I bought.

Treepep 564 #17 Posted August 11, 2023 Poblano and bonnets. Zero heat. Not happy here. Not plants I bought but seeds I grew. I don't have a use for sweet peppers. That's why I didn't buy any
