stegs 325 #1 Posted July 12, 2023 My 416H seems to have a slow leak. it seems to be leaking where the hub and axle all meet? I took the tire off, and cant see where its coming from, but if it sits overnight there is a wet spot Wondering how hard/tough is it to replace the seal? Is the seal even available? if so, where can i find one? Is this something the average person can do, or should it go to a shop?
SylvanLakeWH 25,893 #2 Posted July 12, 2023 Easy to do. Remove tire. Remove hub. (Search hub removal for tips) Use small screw driver or pick to remove seals. Carefully slide new seal back on. Replace hub Replace wheel Available from: wheelhorsepartsandmore.com Lowell is a vendor here on this site.
lynnmor 7,352 #3 Posted July 12, 2023 (edited) When you are picking around the axle to remove the seal, be careful so you don't scratch the axle surface. I have never had a seal come out easily like many on here claim, mine fought all the way out. Clean the axle with a very fine abrasive cloth and remove any burrs, often the set screw will raise up a burr that needs to be filed down. You can use the hub as a slide hammer to pound the seal in squarely. I should have mentioned first thing is to check for play up and down, if there is any, the bearing is bad, play in and out is normal. oliver2-44 9,848 #6 Posted July 14, 2023 Removing the hub is usually the hardest part. Sometimes, the leaky seal helps lube the hub for removal. You will need a hub puller. Don’t use a 3 jaw puller on the hub OD. You will break it. When installing the new seal cover the axle key way slot with tape so it doesn’t cut the new seal. Also once removed and cleaned up you can use the hub to square up and tap the new seal in.

oliver2-44 9,848 #11 Posted July 18, 2023 @stegsCheck the member map, it looks like there are a lot of members near you and one of the might have a puller to loan you. Even @Pullstart doesn't look a long way from you.

stegs 325 #13 Posted July 25, 2023 Good news Got the hub removed last night without damaging the hub or the axle shaft now, how the heck do i get the key out? It wont budge!! I thought the hub was a pain in the butt, but this key could be worse!!
pfrederi 17,856 #14 Posted July 25, 2023 Chisel under the end. For really recalcitrant keys use the cutoff wheel on your Dremel. Slit the key lengthwise (fol owing the curvy of the key so you do not damage the axle) the use a chisel to collapse it from the sides in.
lynnmor 7,352 #15 Posted July 25, 2023 Of course you are soaking it with penetrating oil. If the key isn't extremely stuck, I take a punch and hammer down on the rear of the key so that it rocks up in the front, supporting the axle on some blocking will help and will prevent bearing damage. You don't want to smash it till the sides expand but they are pretty tough and can take some hammering. Once the front is tilted up, a chisel can be used to tap it out.
