Ed Kennell 38,814 #1 Posted July 12, 2023 (edited) Pepe has been visiting every night for a week. Time to give him a ride. Yesterday I set the trap baited with an empty peanut butter jar. This morning. Packed up for the trip. A tree fell on the path, so this is as far as we could go till I cut the tree up. And he's gone. SylvanLakeWH 26,005 #2 Posted July 12, 2023 Curious, what do you put over the trap to transport your little friend without risk of perfuming you, your tractor, trailer and everything within spewing distance?

I have a 6'X6' piece of black plastic that I hold up while I walk to the trap. Cover the trap and load him in the trailer. They feel safe in the darkness. Never had a problem. 6 2

Yeah, but I hear there is a stinkin learning curve on removing a skunks detonator button. I'm not interested in joining the bomb squad.

Beap52 888 #10 Posted July 12, 2023 We had one decide to take up residence under our front steps. I didn't know what was burrowing under the steps until i caught it in the live trap. Not knowing what to do, I called conservation department and was scolded for trapping out of season. After explaining my situation I was given a phone number for local agent who didn't have any interest in re-locating my squatter. He did tell me to walk up with to trap with a sheet or similar covering, lay it over like Ed said. The agent said to move the skunk several miles as they may return and that it may not survive re-location-I didn't ask questions. But i wondered why it might not survive. I just proceeded with the removal. Having never dwelt with this situation before, I put on rubber boots, rubber gloves and a face mask before covering the live trap. I was going to take it to our daughter's farm some miles away so I placed it on a trailer behind my pickup (I didn't want him to "let some loose" in the back of my pickup) and hauled it away. It wasn't as bad as I expected.

Turned out he hand captured a raccoon in the house next to him ( the neighbors were on vacation) . He had used the same exact trap you have pictured. Tom said we can drive five miles north of town and drop off the raccoon near Big Walnut Creek. We did that and drove home. Three days later Tom asked me to come over again the raccoon had returned! We had to drive a little further to relocate the raccoon. I home you don't have the same experience.
Handy Don 12,490 #15 Posted August 9, 2023 I’ve become convinced that relocating these animals feels benevolent but doesn’t solve anything. Wildlife handlers in our area do not relocate because it merely moves the problem onto some other area.

The skunks, groundhogs, possums, rabbits, and raccoons are a nuisance for me, but a real problem for my Amish neighbor whose income is from his truck garden produce. I have seen groundhogs walk down a row of newly planted cabbage plants and nip them all off costing the farmer big bucks. Like Mrs. Amish asked when she saw me hauling the skunk to the woods , " Did you make him dead?". Ja, I did.
oliver2-44 9,876 #17 Posted August 9, 2023 I’ve been trapping squirrels for about 2-1/2 years. I’m at 186 and haven’t made a dent in the population. The last few weeks the pecans are big and they have been hitting them hard. I have some xxx neighbors that love all critters. So I relocate the squirrels to a greener location. We’ll look at that my big trash container is green. I do keep a few of the young one to grill or stew.
