Convert to Elec Start K181

So I have an old and tired K161 with an electric start. I picked up a K181 at the show but is a pull start. I swapped the flywheels and the cowling wont fit over the plate behind the flywheel. And the recoil tin has a smaller hole compared to the electric start. So if I swap the plates behind the flywheel does the crank shaft bearing come of to? Do I have to press this back in? Maybe I should just find a k181 elec start tin?

The bearing usually sticks to the crankshaft but not always. You will need a new gasket and shims to reinstall. What are you going to do for a charging system?

Download the Kohler manual and study the overhaul reassembly part about reinstalling & shimming that aluminum plate.  The shimming sets your crankshaft end side to side clearance.

It can be done though.  :handgestures-thumbupright:  I’ve swapped a bearing plate and flywheel assembly with success in the past.

Thanks guys, I am studying the manual and lookling for a tin at the same time. We'll see which solution happens first. I plan to use the extrnal coil and generator off the K161 as a charging system

      Question about charging system on k301

      The stator and flywheel on this engine are different than others I have worked on so far. The stator is smaller in diameter and has a wire that runs out to a part that looks like an ignition coil but has no plug wire. I am wondering what it is and how do I wire it?
       
      I'm not 100% positive that I put it back in the same spot it came but I think I did. I gapped it at .020" from the bump that sticks out on the flywheel, it is magnetized.

      New starter chewing up new flywheel -- HELP needed

      On a 1992-1996 520H wheel horse lawn tractor, I have replaced the starter motor and flywheel. I also replaced the coil, condenser, plugs and wires. After all that was done, the tractor started first time cranked and I mowed the 1 acre yard one time. When I went back to mow again it would not start and I see the starter motor is now chewing up the flywheel gears. The new flywheel now has severe burring on the engine side. It looks like the starter is not fully engaging into the flywheel. The mounting bolts have a thick washer. Are those washers supposed to be spacers between the engine and the starter motor, thus moving the nose of the starter closer in toward the flywheel? Am I doing something else wrong?

      I'm looking at the flywheel and there is a weld mark. Is this the center mark or am I looking for something else?
