I do that now in my 2014 F-150 4x4. It’s a company truck and an automatic…

Soon people behind me realize what I am doing and next thing you know there’s a line of cars behind me with a 200 ft gap between them all.

The drivers that don’t like it ain’t going nowhere anyway…

My grandpa had a 1950 Ford with 3 on the tree and 6 cylinder that I first learned to drive. Had been driving tractors before that. Then he moved me up to his 1964 Ford with 3 on the tree and 6 cylinder. Used it to drive out and get his mail on a long driveway. BUT....does anyone remember the crank out windshield on old International trucks?

One of the very useful aspects of a standard transmission. 

The latest adaptive cruise controls on automatics will let you do this very comfortably, too!

Sounds like my 1960 Chevy Biscayne, 3 on the tree, foot operated dimmer switch, with an inline 6 banger. Loved that car the back seat was like a bed.  With the wing windows.  Back then don't really remember needing A/C all that much.

Bought this in 1972.  1947 Chevrolet Sedan Delivery. Similar to panel truck but this is based upon a car frame.  From seat forward it's  a car.  Drive train is 1957 Chevrolet car and the engine was rebuilt with a Montgomery & Wards engine kit.  Of course vacuum wipers, dimmer switch on floor.  In addition it has a heat riser on the exhaust manifold that directs part of the exhaust to the intake manifold to help with  cold weather start-ups.  Heat risers require regular maintenance so they don't rust up and quit working.  The distributor has a grease cup that every so often needs to be turned to help force grease into the distributor bushings.  On the front wheel well, is a valve that I close in the spring and open in fall to allow engine coolant to flow to the heater. From factory, "three on the tree" but  when your 19 years old or so floor shifter so much cooler!  It came with 16" wheels but we changed them over to 14" so I could use rally type wheels--besides that 16" tires were almost unheard of in 1973.  Still using "knee action shocks" on the front.  They leak a little so I made a reservoir and a line to each shock that allows light grease to keep them topped off.  I only drive it 600 or so miles a year.   It came with single tail/stop light in the middle of the back door.  When we rebuilt it, we added tail/stop lights from a '47 car so we could have turn signals.  This ole car looked better 50 years ago--but so did I!

Can't say as I remember crank out windshields all too well, but I do remember my Grandfather had a 1947 Pontiac with a lever under the dash that when you moved the lever it would open a big air scoop right in front of the windshield that would force air into the interior of the car. I guess when cars got air conditioning the big air scoop was no longer necessary.

No 3 on the tree, 5 on the floor and dimmer on the floor with 2 - 60 AC. She's under weight with juice brakes so no CDL required. Just a really big pick up truck, that's all.

My dad bought a 1947 Pontiac coupe in 1960.  The car was $750 .  It had low mileage and was painted red underneath and on all the wheels.  It was a display car in the 1947 Chicago auto show.   He owned that car from 1960 to 1968.   My mother drove this to work for several years.  
 

The thing I remember most is that we drive this with a trailer to Portland, Oregon and back to Gary, Indiana in 1961 to visit my mother’s sister’s family.  On the way out we had water bags hanging from the bumpers (they had real chrome heavy bumpers back then), extra fan belts and plenty of tools.  We camped every night on the way west with a 9x12 tent that had a kitchen attachment and front porch!  The tent ⛺️ got set up quicker and straighter as we made our way west.  
 

The 1947 Pontiac was a tank.  The seat in back was big even with four kids in it.  My brother and two sisters had plenty of room and yes the center vent on the dash and hood opened up plenty of air flow going down the road with no air conditioning. 

 

Going up the Teton mountains west of Jackson Hole, Wyoming  the gear shift handle came off in my dads hand making a turn on a hairpin curve.  The pin holding the shifter handle had sheared off!
 

We quickly turned into a logging road turn off.   Dad got out his tool box and found a screwdriver that fit into the short flange the shifter had fallen out of!  That’s how he drove it the rest of the way to Portland, Oregon before he had it repaired at a gas station ( the kind this did more auto repair than sold gas )!

 

Not many pictures of the Pontiac but here are a couple.  The middle two  pics were taken opposite each other !

Lane, I forgot to thank you for posting these pics of the 1947 Pontiac. My Grandfather had one when I was a kid back in the 60's.  Looking at these pics sure brings back some good memories.

Had a 1950 Ford w/3 on tree & a flat head V8. Fun car to drive adding in non cancelling turn signals, 6v electric, etc. 

 

My 1969 GTO is a 4sp (on floor) but has the foot hi beam switch & so does my 1980 Corvette- automatic.
