Because of comprised immunity. Mental therapy has been building it in my head and finding things I haven't thought about as well as sourcing parts.

As long as I'm topside I'm going to give it my all. I will be modifying the bed a little as I repair it. But keep the same look. I may add another side pocket to each side.

I won't be using the tailgate. Maybe hang it up on my shop. 1

JPWH 6,033 #183 Posted July 31 Got released for normal activities today. I have 3 weeks before surgery to make some progress. Weekend plans are shop time! 1 5
JPWH 6,033 #184 Posted August 4 I spent some time cleaning up my shop from months of "lay down n go" so I could have room to work on the dump truck build. I did a rough layout and next step is seating area. That will determine overall length and wheel base. 7
JPWH 6,033 #185 Posted August 4 Floorboard and seat frame mocked up. Also the position of the motor and front axle mocked up. Nothing is welded in place just tacked or clamped. 8
Handy Don 12,209 #186 Posted August 4 Great progress! Gonna need a loooonnnnng drive belt! 2
953 nut 55,169 #187 Posted August 4 That will fit in well with the LOOOOOONG Truck thread going on here. Being that long it will need a LOT of room to turn it. Have you considered moving the front axle back some and the transaxle forward about 30 inches and running tandem rear axles? Would help out with maneuverability and look SOOOO KOOOOOOL!
JPWH 6,033 #188 Posted August 5 I have the front axle positioned for maximum turning radius but the rear end could probably be moved forward. I haven't considered tandem.
wallfish 16,994 #189 Posted August 5 Wheel base is probably the reason why every time I go to build another truck it turns into something else. I prefer short and maneuverable because I don't live on a farm. Akermann steering angles for the steering is important to gain the most turning radius and keep the front wheels on track. Wheel base length is going to determine the radius so the shorter it is the tighter the radius can be. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ackermann_steering_geometry 3
JPWH 6,033 #190 Posted August 5 (edited) I don't have to have the rear axle under the bed. I could easily move it forward 30 inches. I don't have any real tight areas of my yard that I would need the dump truck for so turning radius would not be a problem. I have 2 1/2 acres to turn around if I need to. The assembly would probably want to be mounted on a pair of spring loaded swing arms to allow for uneven terrain reducing the potential for the drive wheels being lifted off the ground. Just a thought, don't want to complicate your build too much. 2

JPWH 6,033 #194 Posted August 6 (edited) I did some more lay out today and I think I have the wheel base down to about 74" and a steering angle of about 40° - 45°. According to the turning radius calculator that should give me about a 6' - 6 1/2' turning radius. I think that is pretty short for a two seater dump bed and keep the dump truck look I am after. I will have to make a couple design changes but had ran short on a couple pieces of metal and needed to visit the metal shop anyway. wallfish 16,994 #195 Posted August 6 How big are your feet? You must be related to that French pole vaulter in some way and need the extra space in a couple of places! LOL https://www.dailydot.com/memes/french-pole-vaulter-bulge-memes/ Maybe possible to shorten that space a little? Just and a couple of jokes! 2
JPWH 6,033 #196 Posted August 6 @wallfishThat was the main part of the re-design. Lol I gained almost 12" with that change.
JPWH 6,033 #197 Posted August 7 I think I have found the final design. Now to start building it. I decided not to cut up any more metal mocking it up and just improvise, looks crude but it works. Final wheel base is about 66".
