Machined one hub today. Had to make a spacer so the hub would fit right. Also got the spindle sleeves machined for the thrust bearings.

Awesome idea!  We have another tractor that might get 10” front wheels like Poppy my 552 and tapered bearings in the hub is a sweet thought!

Gt 14 bearings. I just machined the hub to the same diameter the wheel would be.

I'm mounting the wheels to the hubs then I will set the hubs to the axle independantly. I will probably cut a longer keyway.

Sounds like those axles could be from a "D". When cutting the keyways keep in mind the area where the bearings ride on the axle is heat treated and will kill your milling machine bit. @ebinmaine had a thread a while back where he use a cut-off wheel and die grinder to cut a keyway.

Thanks for the mention Richard.

I did try but my hands and forearms just weren't steady enough to keep the machine in place.

@Oldskool Mike has done it with success so maybe he could offer better pointers than I.

Yes I've had success cutting them with a grinder. I use a combination of Forney cut off wheels and Makita wheels. Makita makes a thinner wheel. First I stack them on my grinder to get proper thickness. Then I make my first cut into some junk steel to even out the diameter of the wheels. The rest is a steady hand and correct orientation to the piece. Last go back to one wheel for a bit of clean up, or use a Dremel.

My suggestion is to try it on a scrap piece first.

Good luck to those that may try this procedure.

Axle cut to length and tacked. Spindle bushings made. Need a little more fitting for the spindle bushings to axle and grease zerks installed. Also need to machine the bushings for thrust bearings.

Axle pivot pin bushing is the next major task.

:confusion-confused:        Looking at the front axle layout your Tie-rod may be quite close to the bottom of the frame, might have to check that out before you committ to it and start the welding. Perhaps the spindles could be lowered a bit if clearance is a problem.

Thanks for pointing that out Dick. I have not thought about tie rod clearance. I'll check it before I install the axle pivot.

I checked for tie rod clearance and you were correct. I have a solution figured out that also makes installing the axle pivot easier. Thanks again Dick.
