Are you thinking 1" spindles into a 3/4 axle hole?

They are 7/8 spindles. From a 1054.

Thanks Richie, I thought about getting a 953 or similar axle but the one I want to use is 2" longer and only has a 3" drop. I think that axle would make the frame too high? I may have to build an axle to get the width I need.

@19richie66 would you happen to have any steering arms that would work with the Ross steering?

Not that I’m aware of.

you know, the non-Ross 953/1054/GT14 steering gear is pretty stout as well.  Once I begin rebuilding mine, I think I’ll swap over to that steering vs traditional :wh:

How about something like this?

This what I was thinking for getting around the big tires and under the frame for the engine up front.

Use new heim joints for the tie rods

That looks complicated. I think by raising the frame and a wider axle then maybe incorporating your heim joints that may work.

I thought this was to be the 2023 raffle tractor.    Any update on the status?

I laid out the build on the shop floor and the frame is going to be +/- 8'. I ordered the 2x2x3/8 angle iron for the frame today and dug around on the metal storage rack and found a piece of 2x3x1/4 tube steel to make the axle and some round stock to make the spindle and axle pin supports. I may get started sticking metal together this weekend.

I'm still torn between low and hot roddie fast (35-40 mph) or big powerful with lots of torque and slow. Maybe UTV type with some tube frame ?????

8 ft is a long one. You'll need to position the Ackerman angle for the steering arms correctly so it tracks and steers right so it helps with the steering radius.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ackermann_steering_geometry

There's lots of crazy math out there for it but go by this simple diagram and it works great for our low speed non space shuttle tractors.

I'm going for 2 seater garden tractor that looks like a dump truck. The wheel base should be about 6'. I'm going for a 3x5 dump bed but I'm short legged at 5'7" so it may shorten up a little.

I don't have a supply of parts tractors so the tires may need to be sourced new. Maybe dual ags and tri ribs.

I was checking out the Ackerman angle and was intending to use the diagram you show as a starting point and go from there.

At low speeds it won't hurt much to have the wheelbase a touch too long for a given Ackerman angle.

Our long wheelbase semi  trucks are a prime example.

At. Low. Speeds.

When I'm turning very sharp into a parking spot or driveway the front of the trucks definitely scrubs some. Unavoidable.

That scrubbing can be negated some on a tractor by making the front wheels tilt out at the top a few degrees.

I found that on some farm tractors and built the spindles for Colossus that way.

Using a tri-rib tire will also help a fair amount.

Here in Hill country those letters have a slightly different meaning:

Only Safety Hazards Allowed

But... on the other hand it appears they have a fairly decent,

Overhead Safety Hazard Avoidance

System in place.

Why did I get involved with this thread? Now you got me wanting to stretch the D and put a bed on it. :laughing-rolling:  If I did that though, I could lower the 3 speed transmission in the frame and use a belt on the front and a small driveshaft to the rear axle. :coffee:
