JPWH 6,033 #1 Posted July 1, 2023 There seems to be several members with the same idea and I have gained some knowledge from these excellent builders so this thread will be about me sharing what works and what doesn't work for me as I progress. This is the parts list so far.10hp Kohler, 3 speed uni drive, axle, wheels, hubs, hood stand, parts of hoods, steering components, hydraulic cylinder and pump, and misc rods and brackets. The rest I will have to make or buy. I don't like to cut up good parts for a project so this may get interesting. I will post pictures when I get parts in hand and progress pictures as I go. 7

Jay, just wanted to thank you guys for all the help moving and unloading mine and the @roadapples collection. With your help getting everything in the barn was a show saver you me and Guy. 5
Ed Kennell 38,173 #4 Posted July 1, 2023 Wasn't there a large dump truck build started at the 2022 show?
WHX?? 48,815 #5 Posted July 1, 2023 Lots of stuff here that can be purposed for your build. Don't be afraid to ask. I have a C-160 hydro rear end with good hydraulics if you go that route. 3

That's a pretty good start. Another thought was to turn the trailer bed sideways to go wide and shorter vs long and skinny. Going wide can accommodate 2 seats and the steering would give a better turning radius. That keeps most of the weight directly over the rear wheels too Something else was using the WH PTO clutch as the actual driving clutch but that adds a 3rd pedal too. Rear suspension with leaf springs? I like @WHX?? 's of going Hydro too and using the hydraulics. I have a power steering setup from a Sunstar tractor that could be plumbed to a hydro trans. I'm just throwing stuff up against the wall again to what sticks and sharing ideas can help come up with a design or solution
JPWH 6,033 #9 Posted July 1, 2023 I was thinking a 3x5 bed but keep the axle about 1/3 from the front. Don't think I need rear suspension? The turning radius for the big tires on the front may be difficult to keep the big truck look.

Or long loads. I found the Eaton 5 hydro had had controls that were easy to adapt to a two seater. F/R motion control stick, A push/ pull tow valve that I use as a clutch for start up. An external parking brake. All at the center under the seat. 6

If I can make it and the 1100’s aren’t spoken for, I would like to get in line. Really wish I would have kept the Xi transaxle I gave away. 😞 Edited July 1, 2023 by 19richie66 1
JPWH 6,033 #14 Posted July 2, 2023 The more I think about it the shifter may be a challenge as well. I have been away from home since Thursday so no shop time for any parts mock up. I am thinking about a Ross steering so I will have to source a steering wheel for that.

Ross are typically splined shaft ends for the steering wheel. I too was thinking of using a Ross to offset the steering wheel to the side for 2 seats and dependability. Bought one a while back but never used it yet. I also have a big steering box from a large tractor but I guess it would depend upon how the build progresses as to which would be used. Big and beefy or slim and fast. Maybe a dropped hot rod looking truck and fast since I don't need it to necessarily work hard. The loader hoe is gone. Went out yesterday just to look for and maybe get some stuff together for a truck build but I was easily sidetracked again and worked on the new bike front suspension. Got the over camber out of it and toed out the wheels a little. Drives and steers much better than it did but still has some more tweaking to be done. 1
JPWH 6,033 #19 Posted July 2, 2023 I was thinking the Ross steering would be easier on the side as well but haven't figured out the linkage yet. Still working out the 12" front wheel turning radius.

Still working out the 12" front wheel turning radius. Obviously the tires will end up much closer to the frame in a turn so moving the engine location or going wider for the front axle is needed. If the engine is located forward between the tires they will go around it. Locating it back by the trans solves the issue too. Moving the axle pivot point back under the engine on the frame is another option. Articulated steering is another. Are you going for mostly a WH stock look or it doesn't matter how much it looks like a WH? I'm always trying to use just WH parts so it definitely influences the available options vs building or buying better design and function stuff.
JPWH 6,033 #23 Posted July 2, 2023 I'm trying to keep it as much WH as possible. I like your idea of the motor between the front tires. Helps keep counter weight up front.
JPWH 6,033 #24 Posted July 4, 2023 I had a little time to mess with this project today. I have the shifter figured out and I think I have the front tire clearance figured out. I will have to bore the axle 1/8th to use the spindles I want to use. What is your opinion of boring the axle. Will it weaken it too much?
