Gear shifter broke?

When we were mowing last week and attempted to put the 8-25 into reverse, it felt like it “broke” and the shifter became loose, leaving it stuck in reverse despite being able to move the shifter. I’ve attached pictures if they’re any help at all. The only two bolts that seem like I can adjust them are already tight. Any advice is appreciated.

@Flgoods This is just what I see looking at a drawing. Never looked at one of these up close and personal. #35 on page 13 is the shift fork. It needs to rotate on a horizontal axis to shift the gears. It has one end sticking out of the top of the case that needs to be rotated by the lever #52. You probably need look at this with an inspection mirror while moving the shifter slowly. Bolt #53 looks like it secures this lever (#52) to the top of the shift fork. Need to verify that is working. Lever #52 looks to pivot on the parts in the large rectangle below, so that needs to be inspected and secure. That's what I would look at. If something has come loose, you might be able to snug it up and get it working. If all of that seems to work as we expect it to, I'm guessing that gear box has to come out for internal inspection.

 

If you need to take it somewhere, I would ask for an estimate. A good used mower would likely cost less than an internal repair of the gear box. Again, this is just what I see from looking at drawings.

From the original pictures, plus the IPL, it looks like lever #52 has a slot that fits over a flange on the gearbox’s shifting shaft and that the bolt securing the lever to the shaft is in place. Still, a good close check of this is important.

From here, I agree with @Jon Paulsen that the likeliest break is internal to the gearbox, maybe the shifter fork or similar item. Getting the gearbox out, opened, diagnosed, parts obtained, and then reassembled will not be quick. A replacement gearbox is certainly possible, maybe even a good used one, but still entails some noticeable labor. If you are having to outsource this, expect it to be pretty costly.

Just an update, I tightened and loosened and tightened again these two bolts until I could tell the gears were getting engaged again with the lever and it worked! Let’s hope these old bolts and washers continue to stay strong. Thanks for your help.
