Thanks for our Flag Day!

 

My Legion/VFW Posts retired old worn out flags, but are wondering what new processes for retiring non-cotton, nylon or polyester flags is.  I've been hearing that it is not a good idea to burn these flags, so it would be good to know how to retire them.

Hi Jim,

 

Thanks for being 'honorable,' I'd like to think I have honor too.  I've been diagnosed COPD (even though I've never smoked), a likely cause from exposure to Burn Pits, so I'm trying to pay more attention to what I'm breathing these days, and I encourage others to do the same.

Hi Gents Rob R. Past Commander of the Brewster N.Y. VFW Post 672 here. We retire flags annually at the Putnam County Park in Kent. We have been doing this for + 10yrs on the Fri, Sat and Sunday preceding Memorial Day as there was an incident at the Park some years ago and all the Vet Monuments were defaced so we strip the flags (stripes from stars) and then burn them in two barrels from 6:00PM > 1:00AM in the morning for all three nights. this is basically pickup loads of flags that come from pick-up points in the village and at the post. The fire is started with dry wood and in burn barrels. You are correct the majority of the flags are polyester and the burn easily but with quite a it of smoke and flame, We consider the annual event a privilege and our duty.
