(Dreaded?) Peerless 915

It's what I've got. Getting hard to shift to reverse, hard to find neutral. I visualize about a 1/4" of what they considered lubricant solidified and now part of the bottom of the case. Anyway, is there a way to squirt something in there to soften up whatever lube might still be on the shifting forks?

I'd rather not drop it and open it up until Fall if I can avoid it. I'm thinking just a squirt of Kroil or WD, or maybe you have a better lube to squirt at the problem if that's even an option. I don't have to work at the salt mine tomorrow, then after that time off will be limited until probably Fall... or Winter... or next spring... But I will have to make the time to do what must be done.

Any ideas?

The uni-drive in an old barn find was locked up with a solid tar like substance.     I filled it with kerosene and let it soak.    Then kept applying torque to the axles till I got some movement.

It finally loosened up and began working.   I did 2-3 more flushes with the kero till it came out clean.

Peerless transmissions have thick stinky Bentonite grease in them. I took one apart once. You couldn't force me to take another one apart!

Tanks. And APC's!

I'll get her soaking as soon as I get her moved around to a good soaking spot.

If I end up having to drop that sucka from the frame, she'll end up with drain and fill plugs. I got a line on an old craftsman I might go get just for the ear box. Also need a place to "store" my old B&S twin L-head after I get another week off to rebuild it

Well, I had a look today and don't see any way to get solvent in or out. The grass has mostly died of thirst. Pulled weeds around my hedge row and for the first time ever, it was fast and easy. Anyway, I think I had better try and get the rascal dropped down.  I read the hard shifting tech note. At least Toro knows the 915 sucks:

"CORRECTION: If you and your Distributor Service Manager determine the transaxle needs replacing, DO NOT replace with the original Peerless 915 transaxle. Replace with a new Peerless MST 205 transaxle, and related shift linkage"

I've done worse things... technically and filthily
