GT-14 question

Recommended Posts

Back to horse topics.  I was gifted a 1969 GT-14 from my father.  It was rough but running.  I did all the regular maintenance business everyone (most everyone) would do.   I went through all of the wires that were crazy, fired her up and made a few laps.  Long story short.  I ran out of gas backing into my garage and left the key on, points closed.  Not good.  The underside of my hood and my garage would say I was quite lucky.

I redid all of the wiring after that flashover.  New everything.

Now it runs sometimes.  I cannot figure it out.  I have fuel, I have spark, I have continuity.  If everything is perfect first go it pops over,  runs choppy and then falls on its face.  Normally that would tell me something like idk carb needs some attention.

I swapped the ignition with my other horse and it runs fine.  Not that I guess.

This machine lived outside under cover.  Before it was in my possession  I would go see the folks several times a year I would gas up, check oils and drive.  It has always been reliable.   choke, gas and pop right over.

Sorry for the long post.  My question is.. Does anyone have a direction to send me.  I feel like all of the things a right and I am uncertain about what to try next.

Luckily my other horse knock knock is still plugging right along.

Many thanks in advance Gentlemen..and ladies

Can you elaborate on that?

WHAT PARTS did you swap?

What tractors did they go to?

Did you swap ALL the parts from both tractors from one to the other and repeat all symptoms?

Or did all symptoms stay on the gt14?

WHAT PARTS did you swap?      Just the ignition switch from one to the other.

Plugs, points, coil, condenser, ignition switch, plug wire are brandy new.  Points gapped (I don't remember to what) @pfrederi filled me in.

What tractors did they go to?    Just the one part to the only other rig I have.

Did you swap ALL the parts from both tractors from one to the other and repeat all symptoms?  Just the ignition switch. Just checking something easy.  New and testing power to and through

All symptoms are on the gt14.  Once rewired it ran fine.  The following weekend cough sputter flooded.  It runs sometimes.(briefly) not reliably like it has since i was a young man.

I fear that i need to mess with the carb.  Not super excited about that.  Straightforward... once its off.  Fairly certain the front end has to go for that.

I'm assuming you replaced the points and condenser after the flashover.

Since you have spark I would recheck your timing, points set to 020 open. You might try changing them to 018 ths open.

There's a key.....

Doesn't matter how old any of the ignition stuff is. That carb needs to be cleaned out.

How old is the fuel line in ALL locations and ... Has the fuel pump been cleaned out and... Do you run non-ethanol fuel?

I will dig in this weekend and report.  All fuel lines are new, no ethanol ever.  The gas tank was flushed and pump was removed and cleaned.  It had a lope in the rpm at full tilt so carb probably needed help before.

Yes sirs repair, replacements were after the incident.

Are you quite certain that you used a coil with an internal resistor? Wrong coil will cause these symptoms.

@Achto  you have a great question.  I am not quite certain. It ran great until I switched out electrical components.  I will check on that as well.  Thank you

Well...

I have the front end apart.  I was looking at my records and it is coming up on 3 years since performed the "park for a while service" and put it on a trickle charger to sit.

There are multiple problems...as anticipated.  I love this rig and want it running but I have other workers that need to be on point.

Fuel and air intake leaks everywhere.  Not enough to drip on the fuel side however enough to stall the healthy flow.

Fuel pump is cleaned and in excellent working order.  All lines and fuel filter are replaced.  Tank nipple was cracked halfway through.  Not leaking, sucking air for certain.  I have elbows and grommets coming.  I have trepidation about drilling the tank.  If I am unsuccessful there is a gentleman here that can make one.  I just do not want to afford that right now.  :D

Carburetor was not getting sufficient fuel and was chock full of crud.  Cleaned and waiting for a rebuild kit.

Points and plug are gapped.  Seem to be in working order.  More to come.... I hope

Thanks guys  I appreciate it,:greetings-clappingyellow:

Sorry about the "dear diary".  I said I would report and hadn't yet

Tank is plastic welded and painted.  I cut the broken nipple off and ground that smooth.  Just waiting for parts...

Carburetor is in and she runs great.  Thanks Norman!  I will need new throttle linkage to make this work and I am still waiting on tank parts but... Progress.  Hopefully driving by the end of this month!

Wheel-N-It

I just stumbled onto this thread tonight. Congrats on getting your GT-14 running. Sounds good. I rustled a 312-8 with wheel weights and a bunch of attachments from Willow Spring NC about 10 years ago, I polished up the tractor and gave it to my Son in Law for a Christmas present. Keep us posted on your progress

@Wheel-N-It Thank you sir.  That is a heck of a great christmas present!  I am happy that you found something here.  I found 1 in a decade.  Still looking.  I would like a horse for each chore but that may require another garage:D

I drove through the neighborhood and got the carb all hot/bothered, and adjusted.  Letting them graze a bit to see if it requires more adjustment.  Ready for more:D
