Year and model

Tractor says 704 on it but it has a k181s motor and a two piece fuel tank its leading me to believe its a 854 any help would be appreciated this is my 1st one

My guess is a 753 with a transplant and wrong belt guard!? 

Really all academic... a nice survivor  but yes as Sparkeye says...good eye Mike.

It is either a 1963 or 64, not a 62. I'm leaning towards it being an 854, not a 753. There are some differences - the 753 used a K161S engine with the short air cleaner.  - the 854 used the K181S engine with the taller air cleaner. The hood on a 854 is one inch longer when measured from the cutout near the gas cap to the joint at the grille - to let the larger air cleaner fit. Which air cleaner do you have?? BOTH have a rather tight fit with their respective hoods - a 753 hood does not work with a tall air cleaner......

 

There is a NON-original knob for a switch? next to the height stop adjuster - what is it??

854 gets my nod now. Serial number puts it right alongside other 854s and the tall air cleaner Bill mentioned.

A good candidate for a mechanical resto and a nice patina.

The leading number "4" is the model year - 1964. The tall air cleaner is the correct 8 HP one.

Hood lengths - I measured a 7HP hood and a crappy 854 hood I have - the shorter 7 Hp measures 15-1/8", and the 854 hood measures 16-1/8" from the tank cutout to the joint for the grille. The 854 is, to my knowledge a ONE YEAR hood.

 

You have an excellent worker of a tractor - IF the 3 speed is a problem - DO consider upgrading to a later 6 or 8 speed - relatively straight forward to do - the 6 speed is a bit easier. Both @Pullstart and @Handy Don have done the 6 speed swap, I did the 8 speed from a 1979 C81. Having the low range is a big asset... You can always go back to the 3 speed later if you want.

It measures 16 and a fuz i believe i truly have a 854 1964 thanks for all your help ill look into the trans swap out

Believe it is the 854 by the hood measure at 16.1 just so happen to find this at the local bone yard this morning

As I said, the 6 speed is an easier swap - no need at get another input pulley or belt - the 8 speed does need both.

No need to play with brake linkage or parking brake?? with a 6 speed - the brake band on an 8 speed mounts "backwards" and you need a Raider style brake rod.

 

You need to holesaw two holes in the metal with either one - one in the base of the hoodstand for the Hi-Lo lever, the other under the seat in the base of the toolbox for the fill tube or dipstick. (the 6 speed has a short pipe and plug, the 8 speed has a LONG dipstick and plastic tube that MUST be cut to fit under the fixed seat....)

Finding this is excellent luck and a good omen!

You already have the two trickiest to find items--the hood and the 3” air cleaner.

BTW, the 6-speeds I’ve seen (e.g. a 5060) don’t have a dipstick opening on the top of the transmission so no need for a hole in the toolbox.

@Pullstart's opinion on the 8-speed is that checking and filling the oil via the lower side plug is pretty easy and unless you are seeing seepage, oil checks on the manual gearboxes are infrequent so you can just plug the top filler hole and not put a hole in the toolbox!

I'm in the 854 camp too. The 704 has a different dash set up with the sunken look. Hood has to have steering wheel removed to take it off.
