Lane Ranger 10,968 #1 Posted June 1, 2023 I am replacing two oil seals on this 36 inch Wheel Horse tiller. Been a while since I worked on one of these. What type gear oil goes in the tiller?
peter lena 8,631 #2 Posted June 1, 2023 @Lane Ranger https://www.bing.com/search?q=tiller+gear+oil&PC=U316&FORM=CHROMN , would personally want a polyurea / climbing lubricant feature , insuring lubrication , staying on everything . might even do a flush first , after many years on that old oil , pete

squonk 41,131 #4 Posted June 1, 2023 I see them leak all the time. I'd almost would put 00 grease in like Ariens uses in it's snowblowers
rick 233 #5 Posted June 1, 2023 They leak badly sometimes because the grease leaking from the seal combines with the dust from tilling and grinds a groove in the tine shaft. Once the tiller shaft seals start seeping, get right on the repair or you will be buying a shaft along with the seals. Outside seal goes in backwards, to keep the dirt out.
mrc 812 #6 Posted June 2, 2023 i'm with squonk and lynnmor on this one. i think the heavy 00 semi-grease with a little 90-140 gear oil should work nicely. always amazed me that folks would till a garden with a very leaky tiller. they are going to eat from the garden right? hmmm

TonyToro Jr. 1,437 #8 Posted June 2, 2023 I put 80w90 gear oil in mine. Seems to work good.

lynnmor 7,307 #11 Posted June 2, 2023 Since the tiller is little more than a chain drive with some bearings, I doubt that grease would be carried up to the bearings and penetrate the chain pins. I would stay with the recommended gear oil.
squonk 41,131 #12 Posted June 2, 2023 That's why I would go with the 00 "liquid" grease
mike avad 41 #13 Posted April 17 Where can you get that 90-140 at haven't seen any?
