Macgyver 90 #1 Posted May 17, 2023 I just acquired a 1984 C 195 with 3 point hitch and pto. The Kohler engine is tired and leaks oil like an old Vw. Would I be a terrible person to upgrade the engine to a rebuilt 20hp Onan since I have one sitting on my bench? And as long as I'm in the neighborhood put in a swept front axle and gear reduction steering? After all it's still all Wheel Horse parts just from different years. It would be like the car from that Johnny Cash country song. 5
Achto 27,570 #2 Posted May 17, 2023 I see no issue with your projected modifications. If it were mine, I would have run it until the Series I gave up & then did an engine swap.
953 nut 55,207 #3 Posted May 17, 2023 It is your tractor and you have every right to do with it as you wish, so long as you aren't thinking of painting it green! 3 1

Darb1964 1,042 #5 Posted May 18, 2023 A good running onan is hard to beat, that will make a great worker.

A member from the early days of the forum built what he called a "C-595" as a prank for some of the purists. It was at the 2008 (I think?) big show. Unfortunately I could only find a couple mentions in the search history, but no pictures. As you say, it was a 195 with the Onan, steering, and hood from a 520-H. Restored with custom "maroon stripe" decals. It was a good looking machine. Edited May 18, 2023 by kpinnc

It was the 595-HD and it was at the 2009 show. You can still see a few pics of it in the 2009 show pic gallery, but unfortunately, that was back when everyone was using Photobucket, so now what still remains has giant Photobucket watermarks on it. This topic has a couple of the build pics and the joke brochure page.

If you read up on some of those 595-HD topics you'll find other stuff about adding the gear reduction. It says the lower steering shaft needs to be extended to work. Thor27 767 #11 Posted June 10, 2023 (edited) Me thinks there is more to that tractor than meets the eye...He lengthened that hood by a significant amount. The 195 is longer behind the hood stand, but doesn't it use the same hood and hood stand as the other black hoods? The book shows the same part numbers 108049 and 109315. I don't have one to run a tape on. Eldon did some beautiful fabrication, wish he was here to spill the beans.. Thor27 767 #12 Posted July 13, 2023 (edited) Sorry for the hijack, too late to edit my last post, but i was very wrong. The hood is moved back at the hinges by a significant amount compared to the "little" black hoods. How else they covered the stretch is pure mystery to me. @Macgyver Please post up some pics, we all like pics.. especially if they have a super C in them. bds1984 1,429 #13 Posted July 13, 2023 I really do not see any difference in the hoods of my C195 v C165 (with a 125 hood as this was before I installed an NOS hood). From what I can tell is the main difference in the two is behind the hood stand. 1
Thor27 767 #14 Posted July 13, 2023 (edited) thank you. Same hood, same part#. Can you take a picture of the hinge setup on the super? Edited July 14, 2023 by Thor27 i can't spell

I would take more if I still had the tractor. These pictures were from a few years ago. Selling that tractor along with a mint 1987 Cougar XR7 that year have been nothing but regrets for me! I don't recall it being any different than the dozen black hoods I've had over the years. 1
