I believe if you look at IH color guides going back to the 50’s you’ll see it’s changed over the years. During the Toro takeover or thereabouts the hue got darker. So it makes sense it matches better than regal but then it’s the opposite of the early to mid 70’s tractors. Regal is a better match in that case. IMHO

was in Home Depot today -- the Regal Red was $6.48 --- none of the Colonial Red in stock -- but just checked Amaz -- they have the Colonial for 7.79

Some users have said that they applied 2K clear to Rustoleum after about 45 minutes with good results. I am very dubious of their answer. What I have found over years of failures is that ALL paints that dry by evaporation have a gas-out period which can last up to 60 days. If 2K, which cures chemically in about 30 minutes, is applied over something that has not completely gassed out, there is going to be trouble.

I wasn't sure if you were referring to using the clear over the red, or using a red over a primer???? thanks

I understood that to mean clear over red. 

 

Trina here as applied 2x color coat over 2x primer after just a few minutes of flash time, more occasions than I could possibly count. That's her Standard Operating Procedure.

just yesterday i did a 2x red over a 2 x primer --- but did it 24 hrs after the primer application -- but it was on a red wh lawn roller tow bar - not something as important as tins appearance -- looks very nice -- ------------- i have previously done the final red 10 minutes after primer  =while primer still "damp" -- that has looked ok also ------------- i think humidity, and temp, and application skills or often, as, or more important.

My Walmart had them both and they were 5.99 a can.

Painted this old floor register today. It was a med brown. Did not prep anything. 2 coats of black and 2 coats of clear. First coat of clear went on as soon as I set the can of black down. It's dry to the touch a half hour later.

My 2 cents:  squonk is on the right track here. I'm a painter, it's what I do. I have a wall full of PPG certificates ( for whatever that's worth ). It puts me at unfair advantage in that if I want to paint something I just mix it and go. However, that doesn't mean that I never pick up a can of Rust Oleum.  Rust oleum never dries , or put in different terms it never gets hard. If you're going to clear it do it right away. There is no reason to wait.  When you wait to recoat Rust Oleum after it initially flashes off , you are re-activating the base color which leads to the cracking , lifting mess that we're all too familiar with. And yes you can coat Rust Oleum with a 2K ( hardened clear ) while the base color is still slightly  tacky,  I do it with some small parts occasionally with no side effects , but never a hood , fenders , etc.

All this painting thing gets confusing. Regarding this 2X paint. Should I use 2X primer before I paint the seat pan/fender on my 310? Is it sandable like auto primer?  The 2X is supposed to have primer in it. I did find the Colonial red and I plan to use it. I intend to use the Crystal clear over it and spray it as soon as the red is on.
