Hi all.  It's been awhile, but thought I'd tell you what is going on.  I re-cleaned the points and gapped them.  I was totally doing that wrong. Cleaned the spark plug and, lo and behold, I got a spark.  Replaced the spark plug with a new one and repaired the spark plug hole.  (I had stripped it out.  I actually, didn't do that repair that well.  The hole is slightly tilted.) Put a little gas in her, shot some carb cleaner in the carb and after a few whirls, she started up.. I am so happy.  THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU for all your help.  Next step is swapping out the steering column, putting the seat back on and fixing or repairing the choke cable.

I think you better think about getting a new head for it

I can scavenge one off another machine, but am curious why you say that.  Is it because a botched the repair, or because generally that doesn't work?

Altering the angle and or depth of the spark plug  electrode can change the flame travel and possibly burn a valve or melt a piston in short order

Ok.  Thanks for letting me know that. I'll get right on it as soon as I find my torque wrench.  I appreciate your help

@chorusguy

Do you have any pics of the repair?

The angle of that plug doesn't look too bad.

How's the depth though?

Is the electrode close to the original position?

If the electrode is too far up in the head you may end up with excess carbon forming.

Honestly, I don't know.  I was afraid to crank down on it to much.  It seems pretty snug.  I may run it today and let it hat cycle to see if it comes loose. I hate that I did it incorrectly,  but am very glad it's running.  I do have another head I can swap out, and have already bought a head gasket, so will probably do that one day, but knowing me, if it's running well, I'll put that off.

Thanks for your reply

I understand that logic.

😁

Just keep in mind that changing the head out is a simple job.

Losing that engine would be a serious shame.

They don't make em like that anymore......

Do you have the torque specs and the tightening sequence for the head?

That will melt a piston. I worked with a guy who put 4 helicoils in a k car, didn't get them deep enough so the electrodes were too high. 4 melted pistons a week later.

Ok.  I changed the head.  Pit everything back together and it wouldn't start.  Then I remembered the gas was off.  Turned the gas on, it burped a couple if times.  Now, it won't turn over.  No click. Nothing.  I gwt 12 volts on all the switch terminals. But get nothing on start terminal when I turn the key.  I'm so frustrated.  Please, please help me

Double check that PTO is OFF.

VERY important to remember that you're working with a 50 year vehicle.

It took decades for corrosion to build.

It's very possible you have either a corroded terminal or bad ground.

Remove AND clean

EVERY end of the wires you took off.

Start with the battery cables whether you touched them or not.

Just a quick hand wire brushing.

Try again.

If it doesn't start get out the test light and work down through the circuits until the cause is found.

It's usually something fairly simple but does take time to hunt down.

Thanks.  I don't have any safety switches. I have rewired everything. Except startersolenoid wires.  PTO is off. I have 12 volts everywhere I'm checking. No voltage in the ignition side of the solenoid.  I'll keep trying.  Just frustrating.  Literally, one second it was turning over fine, next second nothing.

'Tis the way of the antique tractor....

No worries.

Ok.  I have a little bit more information.  I can jump the solenoid, the starter turns but I have no spark.  On the ignition terminal with my meter grounded to the battery, I get .02 volts.  I get the same on the start terminal with the key turned.  Getting no voltage at coil or points.  12 volts on battery side of solenoid, 0 on starter side of solenoid.  I don't have a continuity tester on my meter. Maybe one of the new wires is not connected somehow????

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Oh, and after letting it sit overnight, I turned the key and the starter turned for a split second then stopped.

It sounds like your solenoid will work but you have either a bad delivery of 12v from your key switch to the small terminal, or a poor ground. First, with your multimeter, check for 12v to the small terminal when you turn the key to start.

If you get 12v to that small terminal then you know that you either have a bad solenoid or it is not grounded. If your solenoid has two small terminals, the other one is the ground. Make sure that is good. If you only have one small terminal, the metal body of the solenoid is the ground and when bolted down. You can run a jumper from the metal body of the solenoid to the battery (-) to see if that ground is your problem.

Thanks again to all of you who have helped me with my tractor.  Today, I went out, it turned over, so I put in the spark plug, gave her a little choke and away she went.  Filled her up with gas, put the seat back on and away we went.

So thankful for all of you guys.
