daveoman1966 3,745 #2 Posted May 9, 2023 (edited) First, is it mounted... hung... on the tractor correctly. Study this image of the FORK to be sure. Secondly, are the blades SHARP and mounted correctly.... (they can be mounted upside-down). Third.... is the PTO to Deck belt the RIGHT BELT?...and is the tension set properly? It should deflect 1" or so mid-way of the PTO bell and the front mule drive. 4th... do the 3 deck spindles turn free by hand, with no noticeable drag...and IS the deck TENSION Idler arm/pulley free floating. If not, clean out the debris from under the floating arm (J). (This is a 48" deck...they're all the same setup). stevasaurus 22,712 #5 Posted May 10, 2023 Use the dial to adjust the height of the cut...the lift lever just raises the deck off the ground. One thing that can make a difference...the air pressure in your tractor tires. I think rear tires should be 8 to 10 PSI..front around 6 PSI. 1 Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

Dial adjusts minimum height for some implements, like tiller or snow blade, but is not used for mowers and should be set as low as it will go. Cutting height is set by gage wheels, and front/back angle by the trunnion on the rear of the deck. 1 1 Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

If from scratch, does it have gage wheels on the back? Leveling yoke/linkage similar to WH? Gage wheels on the front? A picture or drawing might be helpful. 8ntruck 6,993 #9 Posted May 10, 2023 Might want to check the front to back tilt as well. Most Wheel Horse decks want the front of the deck to be 1/4" lower than the back. That is adjusted by adjusting the nut on the threaded link that is near the centre rear of the deck. That rod runs front to back on the deck. Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
stevasaurus 22,712 #10 Posted May 10, 2023 Rick, I misunderstood what he meant when he said dial. I was thinking there might be a dial on the deck itself. I know the star dial is for the lift lever. My older 36" rear discharge decks have a pull knob on the deck that adjusts the height of the deck. Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

I unbolted it from the old shell and put it onto the new one. i think i might have figured it out, the chain that connects lift arm to deck is short, guessing it broke in the past and was not fixed properly. The lift arm will not raise or lower the deck. what length should the chain be? Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
Rick3478 428 #12 Posted May 10, 2023 It's really hard to see with the deck mounted, and almost impossible to get your hands in to adjust. I *think* there are like 4 links of chain plus the screw eye and trunnion on top. Someone else chime in if they have one far enough apart to see. I often thought of trying to figure a better setup, but once adjusted it hasn't needed any further fussing, so I didn't. Ideally, the lift handle should just latch into the up position with the deck pulled tight against the bottom of the tractor. Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
8ntruck 6,993 #13 Posted May 11, 2023 The trunoin that attaches to my deck slides on a rod that hooks into the lift arm. The bottom end of the rod is threaded to allow for adjustment of the up position. Distance between the reunion and the hook in the lift rod n the order of 4 to 6 inches.
