jeepdan 321 #1 Posted May 9, 2023 (edited) Prepping a pair of 6" front wheels for paint and new tires. Well, my painting plans have been put on hold until this unexpected oil stops seeping out of the freshly sandblasted wheels. It has been draining out since yesterday. After drilling two holes in each wheel to install some really cool 6" wheel weights. Edited May 9, 2023 by jeepdan 3

Sparky-(Admin) 21,313 #4 Posted May 9, 2023 If you’ve drilled two holes close enough to get into the center hub area then you’ve given a way for grit and dirt and sand to get in. Rims are shot now I would think. 2

Rims are shot now I would think. They aren't. I drilled holes near the outer rim on 3 1/2" hole center spacing. On closer examination, the holes for the grease fittings pass through the weld at the center hub. So maybe 30+ years of pressurized grease found it's way into the cavity through a crack in that area. jeepdan 321 #6 Posted May 10, 2023 (edited) One extra photo for the heck of it. Still baffles my mind. Edited May 10, 2023 by jeepdan
ineedanother 1,369 #7 Posted May 10, 2023 (edited) Lay them flat and clean well with prepsol or something similar. Prime and paint one side at a time and you'll be fine. A bit of a PIA but nothing I do seems to be anything less Those weights should look sharp BTW... Edited May 10, 2023 by ineedanother
Darrenw85 605 #8 Posted May 10, 2023 The place that powder coats my wheels have had to heat my wheels in the over to get rid of the oil / grease. With the heat they still have trouble getting the grease to quit seeping out.
Achto 27,519 #9 Posted May 10, 2023 Acetone bath followed by blowing off with an air gun. Repeat until they stay dry. This would be the procedure that I would try.

I think you are correct that the drilled hole created a small opening into the space between the two halves of the wheel. There probably isn’t much grease in there but it’s enough to mess with your mind!

My son used to do a "service" for disassembled handgun and rifle parts called Ceracoating when he was active in a local Gun Club - a .0005 ceramic color coating - too much trouble. Heat, acetone dip, repeat 5 or 6 times until all the previous lubricant was gone. Then spray the dry coating (similar to powder coating) bake, and slow cooldown. Looks absolutely fantastic when done properly... Too much time and aggrevation for what he would charge... Bill
