Thanks Richard. Not easy to find something like that. Usually has to come from a private source with a bandsaw mill. That is how I got my last batch of 20” wide ash planks. I basically bought the whole tree prior to it being cut.

Neighbor took down this white oak three weeks ago... crane took out 10-15' sections to a flatbed... wish i'd known your needs... but not milled... beautiful wood... 3' stump - probably 80+ feet high... fire wood by now...

It’s a shame but that is how a lot of the large ones wind up. There was an ash here in town a few years back that had close to a 4’ stump. It succumbed to the blight. It all was firewood by the end of the day.

I have a big swamp white oak in my yard that didn't leaf out this Spring.  You can have the whole thing if you cut and haul.

Appreciate it but distance makes that impossible. Appreciate the offer nevertheless.

I totally understand, happens to me all the time.  See tractors (and other stuff) that I want, but cost of travel exceeds the value.  Sometimes do it anyway if there's a local attraction I can take in, turn it into a fun vacation and drag the wife along.

Cas, just talked with a friend that may have a white oak log that is big enough to cut the slabs.    If he finds one, do you still want two slabs?

  @JAinVA has also been gracious to help me with a couple in the near future. Another couple slabs  would definitely be helpful. I have a place close where I can have them also kiln dried.

 

 At this point in my life I should be winding down. The opposite  however is happening. I feel compelled to dedicate myself more than ever to pass on and increase the legacy left to me , and that I leave for my children and grandchildren particularly in my craft. The yokes are a big important part of it and something basically extinct today that only a handful know anything about. My intention is to make as many as possible and to leave several in various stages of completion as a guide for future generations.

Are you referring to oxen yokes. I ask because my dad had one hanging in his shop in Maine. My sister has it now.

Cas, I checked in with my friend today.    The white oak he was is only 16" wide.      He does have a lot of walnut.

 

 

I have left a message at another local guy that may have some white oak.      Will let you know what he has if he answers my message.

 

I just got a call back from the other guy.   He has one slab 2 3/8 thick x 18 x 48  that has some knots.    Is that something you could use?   If you are interested, I could go (5 mile) and get pictures.

The 2 3/4" slab in the pic is over 18" wide.   Clear, I don't know, but I could get a picture. It is on top of a stack that I just need to remove the tin.

I'll try to get a pic of the surface of the 2 3/4" walnut slab.

Look on FB marketplace, there are numerous people selling white oak slabs in western NJ.  Almost every other tree service seems to have a sawmill now
