Looking for white oak

Looking for a couple of clear white oak slabs perhaps from those of you who have sawmills. They need to be at least 2-1/2” thick x 18” wide x 48” long an not have the pith in it. They would have to be taken  to the Show in June if possible.

Cas, I’m guessing you are specifically looking for a single slab and not a glue-up like a thick butcher block tabletop?

Cas, I will be heading West on Sunday to hunt turkey on my sisters farm in the Appalachians.   My nephew has a couple sawmills and makes furniture.  If he has any white oak slabs in the size you need, I could get pictures and prices.

It sure is!    I think it’s the same oak as the top pieces, but am not sure what the top is. I just know it was oak.

That would make a pair of very impressive running boards.                   

When we built our house I had a few hundred board feet of whit oak sent to the saw mill. Took me a few years to use it up. One natural edge slab was used as a mantel above our gas log fireplace.

 

I love the figuring in the slab on the right. Some people see that as a defect, I see it as God's natural artistry.

I too have a friend with a mill and will gladly check with him. There’s a good chance he has what you’re looking for. By the way I have always admired your woodworking capabilities, you my friend are a true craftsman!

I am truly humbled and appreciative by all the quick help you all are giving me. There are a couple of good leads in progress . Let’s see how it works out so I don’t waste everybody’s time. Cas, do you want the slabs kiln dried?   If so what moisture %?     Or do you prefer green and dry it yourself?

If they are dried better . If they are green it’s ok also. If green perhaps then 5 feet long to allow for some inevitable cracking.

Bad news Cas.   My nephew does not have any white oak.   On my way there I use rt 234 and pass the big show site.    I noticed Klingers Sawmill is just a mile west of the show site. 

You may want to check with them for WO slabs

I will check with the mill that cut my oak when we built the house. They sometimes cut lumber and keep half of it as payment then sell it off. Custom cuts are no problem and they can cut up to 20" slabs. I will let you know what they can do for you.

This company may be the best in my area.  I bought a few items in the past that they sawed and planed for a very fair price.  I took a quick glance at their live edge offerings and was shocked at the current prices.

Sorry to say that our saw mill manager said they never get any logs larger than 12" diamiter. The larger ones go to the vernier mills.
