73 14hp/hydro

The 73 14hp/hydro has been my mower tractor for years now! It backfires when i shut it down, from the smell, i have my main jet opened a little bit too far. Do i remember a chart that says how many turns open your main/slow speed was? i remember 10, 12, 14, 16 hp. Thank you

Use the chart to get it running - once it is warmed up, adjust the low speed screw for best (not always the highest) RPM then the high speed for best RPM.

Go back to idle, throttle up as usual - watch for a poor transition  from idle circuit to high speed - you may have to richen the idle.... BT,DT.

By chance, is the air bleed clear in the high speed needle ?? - it is a VERY tiny hole, the needle it hollow. Plugged up makes an engine run rich......

Do you let it idle down for a few min. before turning off , can help cool engine down and sometimes helps with backfiring, probably a little rich too.

That’s what i do. I’m printing off 10 of them charts and putting them in my shop!! 1 right in front of me everywhere I turn!!!!! I have the Kohler carb (im 99% sure). How would i tell which carb i have?

I answered my own question! Check see if the hi speed is out 3 1/4 turns or 1 1/4 turns! Duh!
