Frank DeHaven 27 #1 Posted April 24, 2023 Okay so I have my engine running but it seems like I have to keep the key turn to the start position or the engine will shut off. I have a new coil, condenser, and points. Does anyone have any other suggestions? My tractor is a c120 automatic with a 12 horse power Kohler. Thanks in advance
squonk 41,136 #2 Posted April 24, 2023 Sounds like a bad key switch if the wiring hasn't been altered.
pacer 3,173 #3 Posted April 24, 2023 Your battery wire and solenoid wire are 'together' for some reason - and, most probably the switch is bad ... but, if the wires have been 'messed' with the wiring could be crossed....
wallfish 17,003 #4 Posted April 24, 2023 (edited) It's not getting power to the coil + side in the run position. Only the start position so it fires. Let the key go and it stops. You need to figure out why there's no power from the key switch to the coil in the run position. The terminal on the switch for the coil is (Or should be) marked " I " on the back Maybe some more background info would help internet diagnostics New to you tractor? Or it's been running fine and this just popped up? Was anything changed on it? Switch, coil etc etc Is this an original motor? Kohler made K301 and M12 which have different ignition systems. Any new wiring done recently? Anything else? Edited April 24, 2023 by wallfish

Thanks in advance On your other post you showed a new ignition switch you were installing. Is it a 103-990 switch? Is the "I" terminal of the ignition switch connected to the "+" terminal of the ignition coil? Is the "S" terminal of the ignition switch connected to the small terminal of your starter solenoid and nothing else?

ohiofarmer 3,276 #12 Posted April 26, 2023 The real fun begins when the switch has no markings on the back. Then it is time for the continuity tester. It really helped me recently when a wiring schematic was posted for my 314-8 The factory part number from Mother Toro was listed ,but that switch from Toro is 48 dollars. Put the part number in the open search internet and ordered two for twenty bucks. The wiring schematic also has each terminal stamped with the letters and a color wiring harness easily traceable
