Work Horse gt 1800 versus 1848

can someone describe differences between 1800 and 1848? I see from Tractordata.com  the 1848 was produced in '82-83 and the 1800 in '84 - both are listed as same Briggs engine and Eaton 1100 tranny .......with both having 48 sd mower - but can't find info any features, accessories, mechanical or misc listed differences - Wondering if maybe tire size or rims different, or something else, etc? thanks, Bill

I don't know much about the 1800 but I have an '82 GT-1848. Mine has been re-powered with a Honda GX610 v-twin engine.  It has the Eaton 1100 with hydraulic lift, otherwise I don't see many differences between it and the 1987 312-A or even the 1992 416-H I have, although the latter has the forward/reverse and lift handles on the column, which I dislike. No idea what the "stock" tire sizes, rims, etc. would have been or should be, but I'm happy to look at things and answer questions about the 1848. Tractordata.com specs seem to be a bit sparse on some of these.

GT-1800 did not come with a deck - deck was optional

GT-1848 came with a 48" deck as standard equipment

I guess that explains the "00" in the model number - I have often wondered about that.  Are you saying that otherwise they are the same?

There may be subtle differences but all used the same 422437-0663-01 engine.

info about no mower as standard is interesting for 1800 --- of course that would have allowed buyer to order as attachment a 42 sd or rd????????  Also -- on Tractordata.com -- it lists blower and blade as available for 48 but not for 1800 - which is weird - since seemingly either tractor would be identical for both using blade and blower? -- but that may just be the way tractordata.com site listed info?

I you look at the Attachment Interchange the standard equipment is identified along with the available options.

did the 48 come with a deeper wider rear rim with bigger tires?

Deeper, wider, bigger than what, the 1800?  I have no idea what was on the 1800's, and I can't guarantee that what was on the 1848 when I got it was stock. What it has now is Carlisle X Trac ATV Bias Tire - 16x6.50-8 on the front, and 23x10.50-12 Carlisle Ags on the back.  I think those were the widest tires I could fit on those rear rims, so they may be 9.50's. But they were the rims that were on it when I got it.

Okay here’s what I know about this. I bought my Work Horse GT-1800 brand new in August of 1984. It came with a 48” deck, I don’t remember hearing anything about it being an option. Both the 1800 and 1848 had the wide rear wheels. One quick way to tell if it’s an ‘82 or ‘83 is the older style hydraulic lift lever with that comes out on a 45 degree angle and has a removable knob. The ‘84 has a cast  handle that comes out and goes up. Also there was two different grays, earlier tractors had a metallic gray and the latter was a different shade non-metallic. I wish I knew how many hours are on my tractor but it’s gotta be 3000-4000 hours. I mowed commercially with it for over six years, and tilled countless gardens, plow plenty of driveways. Plus the many other tasks these tractors can do! I have said it before and I’ll say it again, a Work Horse is a Wheel Horse through and through. Here’s a few pictures taken over the years, and after I gave it a well deserved restoration in 2018.

The Wheel Horse Garden Tractors were all sold that way no deck. Buyer chose what attachments he wanted to buy with the tractor.

Don - every time i see your restore photo i love the color combo of the workhorse even more --- i think this may be the first time i have heard of the total hours you have run it -- WOW !! And just think.... that Briggs 18 hp is about half the hp of that VW bug you have in the background of that driveway photo in the snow!!! I'm hoping to acquire an 1800 or 1848 sometime in future -- but doubt i can replicate the amazing restore job you did -- thanks for insights --- Bill
