Hobby desk for scale models or other small things...???

Recommended Posts

ebinmaine

Been thinking it's about time I start messing around with scale models again and I'm wondering what you folks use or a small hobby desk.

It would have to be something that can be left set up all the time.

What's your setup? What would you change?

I’m currently looking for an old glass display case for my 1/72 scale Diecast airplanes. I don’t have the room to make dioramas.

This is a table made out of an old sewing machine. I need more room and something enclosed to keep the dust down.

These pictures are not my own desk but I have one exactly like it. I've used it as a model building station in the past.  I'm leaning towards going back to it.

I used this drafting table when I was working on plans but now it's handy for working on models. It's set up 'permanently' just outside my workshop in the basement. :)

Good contrast to see well with the top, and a fair amount of room. But, drafting tables can be somewhat flimsy, unless they have additional bracing.

20 BONUS POINTS for the seat!!!!  :thumbs2::thumbs2:

Eric, I used to do plastic model kits too, very satisfying to while away a bit of time.

I used a fairly standard computer desk which I could leave in situ when I wasn't working on a model.

I like the beaurea style so you can close away the work area to exclude dust etc.

Maybe I will have a bash at some 1/35th scale armour again.

Mick.

As far as a “hobby desk” with Diecast not much work needed. However I had planned to start building plastic airplane models. I’ve amassed over 300 kits most still sealed. So for this I snagged an old antique drafting table from where I work as they were getting rid of it. But as it were my job has ruined my ability to hold a steady hand and to sit for very long at a time. So I went metal.

Our Meeha Mirror doesn't chew shoes or furniture but she shreds anything plastic. :confusion-shrug:

Absolutely recommended.

I've messed around with scale models, mostly cars trucks with a plane or ship tossed in, since I was maybe 8??

Always enjoyed it.

A few years ago I picked up a few kits of things I'd wanted to build when I was younger.

It's about time I started in on them again.

A couple particular builds I'd like to do:

My Ole Man drove an IHC S Model 4300 for 2 different companies.

One of them was a red cab with a black frame. Aluminum 6000 gallon short height #6 oil trailer.

Another thing I've had a serious liking for over the years is a stretched tractor with shorter trailers.

LOTS of drivers here started going longer wheelbase for comfort reasons and it... Got outta hand. :)

I have a Peterbilt 359 truck that I'd like to use for that. Likely a standard issue gravel dump trailer.

It is actually quite solid. I added the piece of aluminum stock to the edge because the one that came with it was junk. The chair is from my daughter with a little extra added. That Lotus Indy car model has a Wheel Horse model with it.:)

I saw that.

I was looking for those at the show the other day. One of the dealers knew exactly what car and team it was but hadn't seen one in a while.

I just put a desk in one corner of the shop, made it out of a repurposed bench top. Added some free cabinets above and end capped it with a side box.
