Shifting Trouble 2 & 3

Recommended Posts

68Ranger

I have a 1986 Lawn Ranger and I'm having trouble shifting into 2nd and 3rd gears. I'm guessing the synchronizer's for those gears are going out. Any suggestions on where to find replacements?

I believe a Lawn Ranger had the same transmission as the larger models back then...?

If so there aren't any synchros.

The cluster gear and the two that ride in the shift forks are likely in need of replacement.

If they're the same transmission you can use a cluster gear from many others.

@stevasaurus any thoughts?

Eric is correct about no syncs.  Sometimes a loose or sloppy shifter can cause this.  Loosen the lock nut at base of shifter and tighten the Allen Head set screw.  Snug the screw and then back out a touch, then retighten the lock nut.

If the sloppy shifter is not your issue, try the double clutch method and/or rock the tractor a little.  :occasion-xmas:

I hope you haven't been trying to shift 2-3 or back while moving.  There are no syncros and that will wear out the 2-3 gear....

The square cut gears need to be lined up perfectly so you may want to let the clutch out a bit to get the gears to move, push in the clutch and then shift to second or third when the gears are almost stopped.

WHX??

:text-yeahthat:no speed shifting here.  Make sure the belt guard is in proper place and stopping the belt. No grinding me a pound allowed! :)

Sometimes you have to feather the clutch to get her to go. With experience it becomes 2nd nature.

Going one step further back the set screw out completely.

Pull the shifter and inspect the ball on the end for wear.

N0, I'm not racing around the yard speed shifting. I just want to make gear selection easier. The word synchronizer was wrong.

I've read about others having the same problem.

Here's my question. Could the worn engagement area be repaired? Couldn't the area be welded and re-machined? The repair wouldn't be as hard but it seems to me that shifting would be improved.

Oh yeah real easy just abit of weld on the flat spots if any. File or grind round and back in she goes for another 50 years.

I think I would ask some questions first...

1. this is an 86...how long have you had this horse, have you always had this problem, what do you use the horse for???

2.  I do not see 1986 Lawn Ranger on my list...what is your model number.

Depending on what transmission you have, and not really knowing if anything is wrong, your questions are really speculation.  Here is the deal...you can replace bad gears with good used ones...you can weld and grind to fix existing gears (easier to replace unless you have the skills and tools to do the welding and grinding).  Give us the model number and let's see what you really have there.

Did you try any of the suggestions above??  Did you pull the shifter and check it out??  :confusion-confused:
