C 101 Engine Mount

Recommended Posts

ANTPER

Hello Folks

I have 1979 C 101 with rubber bushing engine mounts. It runs great but I'm picking up this rattle sound depending on the RPM and trying to locate cause and spent lots time trying find it. Engine sounds perfect at high to full throttle RPM.  the engine is bouncing around more than I like maybe because I'm used to solid engine mounting on my later units I've owned. The rubber bushing cups appear to be looking good. Are there holes already in the chassis that would allow to mount the Kohler directly down onto the chassis without bushing and probably eliminate that rattle sound?

Anthony - 2 things. If you eliminate the shaker plate, the engine height is too low - and that is if there are holes (I do not thinks so) to mount it.

Some folks here have made their own solid spacers to eliminate the vibration mounts and keep the shaker plate. I bought a used set of CNC'd solid aluminum ones - they are on fleabay and work great - bolt right in place. They also eliminate the twist of the engine shaft towards the rear when you engage the PTO...

A cheaper alternative 4 spacers and some washers.   you may have to drill two holes in the frame.  I didn't have to.

I don't have picures, but I left the shaker plate on one and made solid mounts from  1/2 X 2 steel bar stock and washers.   Also worked fine.

Paul, is that a special oil pan with the 4 tapped holes and no flanges for thru bolts?

It is number 5  part number 4719908 used on WH shaker mounts.  You can see the bolts that hold the pan to the block just to the left of the mounting bolts.

Paul - that works OK if you are NOT going to use the PTO - thw hoop pivots in a hole in the shaker plate under the engine.....

Not a problem  A piece of angle iron and a couple holes....or WH part #102870  (Which is a piece of angle iron with 3 holes) provides the support you need

One other possibility.    When I built my low rider, I used an engine from a parted out C-141.    I cut the front and back angled ends  off the shaker plate and used it as a engine mounting plate.

I don't remember if I had to drill holes in the frame or used existing holes.    In this case, the PTO hoop plate would exist.  Of course spacers would still be required under the plate to put the engine at the correct elevation for the belt guard.

I used the cnc motor mounts and chose it so I wouldn't have to pull the motor. It was easy to lift one side at a time with a prybar to replace them.

You have an older frame for a Charger or Raider. The C-101 has the front hitch supporting the front axle.

But back where the engine mounts the frames are similar.

Lotta great suggestions guys. Its a 79 c101 that I just installed a 12Hp. that beast is heavy as I just installed it from a blown up 10HP and I'm not looking forward to picking it up again. I actually removed the 12HP shaker plate and swapped it as my factory installed one was beautiful . I don't have an over head pulley system so I may go with staying with the shaker plate and lift one side at a time with leverage and go the washer or solid mounts trick. As always appreciate the quick and accurate Info. I'll stay in touch on weather that solved my rattling at various RPM

So the cut offs from the shaker plate under the block where exact engine height you needed?

In my case, I was building a custom, so engine height didn't matter.     To keep the engine at correct factory height, spacers would be necessary under the plate.

Did most of you make the solid change as the rubbers were worn out anyways or just tired of the engine bouncing around and the movement?

Hey Anthony @ANTPER you might also want to check to make sure the engine mounting blocks haven't come loose on the frame. My c-165 was shaking pretty badly so I installed a set of solid mounts from Zach Kerber but when I installed them I found the entire rear mount was loose and likely the main reason it was shaking so badly.

I just installed the 12HP few weeks ago and plenty tight. Now I did not mess with the angle mounts that are bolted to the frame I bolted the S. plate to it. Guess cant hurt to look. At high idle it stands at attention and doesn't move. Its at idle that it does the dance. I may take look at idle mixture settings.
