acc7484 52 #1 Posted April 3, 2023 Greetings all, I have a Wheel Horse 312-8 M12 Magnum that runs fast way too fast. Last summer I had the same problem and discovered the Governor gear was in pieces. So for my winter project I replaced the gear, the flag and rebuilt the engine. After reassembly it started right up and ran it for about 20 minuets as a break in. Runs great, however I still have the issue of the engine revving too high. The governor spring is in the 6th hole as the manual states. I did not move any springs. I reviewed my pictures. The flag pushes on the governor shaft as it should. The governor was adjusted as per the manual. Turn the shaft counter clockwise and hold the throttle wide open tighten the bolt. I don't understand why its over revving. Did I miss something? Please help Thanks

Try adjusting it again, you have to make sure the the governor shaft stays all the way CCW while holding the linkage at WOT. (throttle lever on dash at idle, adjusted correctly). Sometimes a third hand comes in handy to hold the shaft back while you hold back & tighten the linkage arm.

Pullstart 62,905 #4 Posted April 4, 2023 This is a similar engine, but same adjustment process.
gwest_ca-(File Mod) 11,046 #5 Posted April 4, 2023 There is a chance the governor arm is slipping on the shaft because the arm clamp is stretched and can not be clamped tight enough. A hacksaw cut in the arm to gain clamping pressure on the shaft should correct that.

acc7484 52 #9 Posted April 5, 2023 I adjusted the governor again, making sure the the governor shaft was all the way CCW while holding the linkage at WOT. The governor arm was slipping on the shaft. My bad. Thank you all for your inputs. Running great ..... time to mow.
