Pullstart 63,498 #76 Posted June 6, 2023 I’ve some cleaning up to do! Next is a gate or maybe one on each end, then cover it!
Pullstart 63,498 #77 Posted June 6, 2023 It’s usually quite breezy here. I have plenty of good welds, plenty of ugly ones. Yes, the drag link rotates the tie rod quite terribly, so I welded a strap of steel to the leaf springs. Very unorthodox, but I don’t plan to jump it or anything. Yet. Other than welding gas, two belts, and the poultry netting, I sourced everything here on the property for the build or paid nothing for it. If I were to build another, it’s hard telling how similar it might be. If I ever tear this transmission down or swap another one in, I’ll be sure to lock the differential to slow it down even more. It’s twice as fast as it needs to be for sure!

As Doc would say on Cars, in order to turn left, some times you might find yourself turning right. Just move the seat round the other side of the steering wheel. Mabe a bar stool pad on top of the engine.

Pullstart 63,498 #80 Posted June 6, 2023 Went for a nice ride today. I had the idea that it would be front wheel drive, until I got thinking. If it’s a rear wheel drive primarily, it’ll be rear steer and I can push the chickens with the noise of t(e engine instead of hoping I don’t run any over by pulling them along. Time for a gate, and covering.
Mickwhitt 4,875 #81 Posted June 6, 2023 I thought you were completely conkers when you mentioned this. But we have a TV show over here where a celebrity is trying to make farming work for him. He bought a mobile hem house for his set up. Very upmarket unit completely self contained and shockingly expensive. This one looks more like your idea.

Pullstart 63,498 #84 Posted June 7, 2023 Tarp pulling time! This is the pool winter cover. It’s showing it’s age but has lasted quite a while. It’ll provide weather shelter and the poultry netting will cover it for safety protection.

Pullstart 63,498 #86 Posted June 7, 2023 I got the pool cover pulled, and some nieces are playing in the new digs!
Pullstart 63,498 #87 Posted June 7, 2023 A simple cut and weave, and the new lid will be secure. I have some sheets of rigid plastic for the sides, then I’ll add the poultry net and secure everything. 2
Pullstart 63,498 #89 Posted June 7, 2023 Wrastled the plastic down from the pallet racking to sheet the rest of the sides. Ends will be open for airflow. Notice the plastic is not able to shed water off the pool cover. I’m more or less concerned with airflow and high winds more than water shedding. The last thing I want is a chicken parachute.
Pullstart 63,498 #90 Posted June 8, 2023 We counted 121 into the chicken tractor. Started with 131, lost 3 in the first week. 1 got pecked to dirt nap. Lost 3 to a hawk, lost 3 to This is our view out the bedroom window. 1

davem1111 2,073 #94 Posted June 11, 2023 This whole project makes me smile BIG - awesome! One thing it reinforces for me, is the value of being a pack rat. Imagine how much it would cost if you had to buy everything used to build this, rather than using stuff you had "laying around". "I might need that for something someday" is a very valid reason for keeping things, especially scrap metal, lumber, other building materials and old machines. 3 1
Pullstart 63,498 #95 Posted June 11, 2023 @davem1111 the axles I’ve owned for about 15 years or more. I toted them from one house to another, thinking I’d use ‘em some day. I had no idea this would be how they are utilized! @Treepep here’s some inspiration for your chickens

I,m ashamed to admit I do not know how to look that up? Driving to Maine is not in my plans this year...Yet. Although allowed chickens are probably happening at the next (hopefully final) house. Thanks again for the inspiration @Pullstart. I have been appointed the safety coordinator in my field along with other responsibilities of course. You scare/excite me. No videos of me so nothing unsafe happens 1

JoeM 7,883 #100 Posted June 12, 2023 I kind of cheated and jump from page 1 to 4 but there is something missing. Need a integrated rubber paddle accessory mounted for plucking. they are meat chickens. (with a lawn vacuum to suck up them feathers) I see you got the kiddos to help, best help ever!
